Wonder what the percentage breakdown of the homeless population is between those who are homeless due to their own choices, namely drugs, as compared to those who are homeless because of losing their job and being down on their luck. I’m betting it’s has to be north of 95%+ the former and no more than 4-5% the later.

You need to throw in untreated mental illness in that, as well. And maybe account for the veteran population (higher than you'd think) in those numbers, though many of them could fit in another category.

The personal stories of the homeless vary as widely as the people themselves. That's part of the reason seeing our government scramble to "house" thousands of "migrants" streaming across our border while they largely ignore the homeless in the same cities sickens me.

However you view the homeless aside, we all should agree that money is better spent (if it is spent at all) on actual US citizens in need.

What does she say in that video? Something about not being able to live inside because she conducts electricity?

Or me. I was close to that level with my drug usage for about 10 months in 2019 & 2020. I wasn't living on the street but was spending time there. You couldn't see the floor in my apartment and I had stopped all personal hygiene. It is possible to recover. 08/01 will be 3 years for me

Congrats on the success. If I may ask (totally don’t have to answer if too personal), how does one get to that point in the first place? Dr Drew would talk about two indicators: genetics of addiction and history of trauma. Also, what made you get clean?

Found out yesterday that a friend’s daughter who was a all state basketball player, softball player and valedictorian in HS graduated from college and became a successful pharmacy rep. Lost her job, two houses that she owned due to her dating a crackhead. Spent two years in jail. Unbelievable what that shite can do to you.

You bring up a great point. And the person not doing drugs but lost everything is still of sound mind and can go to many places who will help. The druggie doesn’t want help because the drug is their help.

Anyone who wants helps has tons of avenues to get it.

This looks staged. The dirt looks placed all over her body. Her arms are still muscular, cigarette is not lit, the crack pipe has no fire under it.

This is correct.

That said, I think humane institutionalization is the answer. Yes it's expensive but sometimes you have to suck it up and pay the cost of your bad decisions in the past.

The big problem is that the people living on the street excluding the severely mentally ill for the most part couldn't care less about getting actual help.

They like being homeless.
They like not having to pay bills.
They like not having to work.
They like being able to get high whenever and wherever they want.

They are a blight.

But weak men create hard times and That includes the men who don't want to face reality and make difficult choices.

Yes there is a genetic component to it. Life experiences contribute as well.

How did I get to that point? Basically just give up. I quit my job in the beginning of 2019 and tried to kill myself. LAPD was kind enough to give me a ride to a psychiatric hospital where I stayed for a month. When I got out I went into a death spiral. I was spending $6000 a month minimum on drugs.

How did I stop? I made a deal with God. If I could just get to the point where I could have some self respect He would take care of everything else.

I had lost everything except my soul. For many years I acknowledged that I had a drug problem but in my mind I was still a good guy. In the end I was not a good guy. I was a terrible person.
