One thing New Orleans really did right over Baton Rouge...the interstates

Minus the 4 lanes at Williams becoming 3 then 4 again after Veterans, the interstate system in New Orleans is so much better designed. I think there might have been a shite ton of federal money that they used after Katrina to revamp the area around Causeway Blvd and where 10 and 610 split, but it's the only place in Louisiana that has an interstate system that resembles that of a large city (lanes, ramps, etc.).
Baton Rouge, on the other hand, is an absolute shitshow. I have never seen anything so stupid as to having the right lane funnel into one lane coming off the bridge of the widest river in the country on a major east/west interstate. It's like you chronically have an accident on the right lane everyone has to get around, and it backs up traffic EVERY Friday, no matter what time of year. The potholes on 12 after Airline and Sherwood are awful as well. Only 10 southeast of Baton Rouge (where the money is) is respectable.
Stellar job, Broome.

What does Broome have to with an interstate system built over 60 years ago?

I'm not a fan of hers, but shitty engineering, interstate maintenance, and failures of DOTD aren't exactly her fault

I just don't like Broome

To think they almost built that Vieux Carre Expressway at one point.
That would have been a shitshow.

Seriously, that I-12 corridor is rough. When was the last time it got any real repairs or repaving, 90s?

Interstates in NOLA are turrible. The fact that they are better than Baton Rouge... well... BR just sucks more, I guess.
They have been adding the fourth lane in NOLA for more than 20 years, and still aren't done.

Is this where we give homage to the governor who decreed the height of the Mississippi River Bridge at Baton Rouge such that many ocean going vessels could not go father up stream and this greatly increased the tonnage of the port of Baton Rouge as well as ports downstream?

NOLA has a bypass for interstate traffic to go around it called I-12.

I don’t remember much Katrina money going to the interstates in Nola other than the new twin spans.
I agree though, traffic is much better in Nola that BR. Probably has something to do with some decent east west routes in Metairie and the Earhart/Airline options to get into the city

It amazes me that for years on I-12 around Millerville/Oneal or whatever the lanes were striped so the fast lane merged into the middle slower lane when it went from 3 to 2 lanes.
It took years and years to restripe it the other way
I'm still in wonder any time I see this done anywhere in the country.

I think your forgetting the 10 years of frickshow while they widened it.....it was a fricking nightmare

The area around Causeway was under construction several years before Katrina.
I10 is credited with destroying the Claiborne and Treme neighborhoods. A river front underground interstante through the French Quarter probably would have been a mistake, but could have been nice if done correctly.

It has more to do with the historical design and layout of the city itself (and even the Metairie/Kenner area) in my estimation. It's all a very compact space built on an interconnecting street grid. Baton Rouge, on the other hand, is just a big sprawling mess. That's as much a reason for its issues as the Interstate itself. Although, a loop certainly should have been built in the past 40 years given all this.

THe plan wasn't to run the whole thing underground... just where it crossed Canal St. A significant portion of it would have been where the riverfront attractions are now located.
Could you imagine, walking out of St Louis Cathedral and seeing a damn interstate?

I10 does this west of mobile where it goes back to 4 lanes

I wanna play foul like lefty liberals do. Sharon W Broome was and is behind this messed up interstate system.

Hence the 'done correctly'
Run it at least depressed if not completely underground/hidden.
The proposal of elevating it 40' was really bad, but I guess it was a product of the times.
