Absolutely if those are the two choices. Everyone should. It's more "free market" than min wage and comes without the unintended consequences
In the case of tax/redistribute, is directly subsidizing the operations of the walmarts of the world not an unintended consequence?

Food stamps built Walmart. That cats been out of the bag

Old school liberals favored subsidizing. Progressives favor wage hikes. Which one is more economically viable?
Isn't testing and measuring the only way to really know?

Don't we have this already through decades of economic data around the world? The US model seems to be failing as it actually promotes stagnation

Which one doesn't present barriers to entry?
Don't we have to weigh any potential barriers to entry or other negatives vs the potential benefits? Isn't that the core of any policy decision?

That seems like a terrible idea because in a diverse society it will just pick winners and losers. Barriers to entry benefit large corporations who are well capitalized over small business. That's how Main Street dies. Economic decisions shouldn't hurt mom and pop just to favor BigBiz

Wrong the rise in welfare state is do to people not taking responsibility for themselves and applying themselves...then teaching their kids to do the same.

The rise of the welfare state has absolutely nothing to do with minimum wage and everything to do with LBJ. To the detriment of a large portion of our population.

Raising the minimum wage just raises prices.

Not saying you are wrong, but my knock on this argument is the price of basic goods are rising regardless. Whether it be inflation or cost from suppliers, cost of living is rising overall.

And you would have the majority of the restaurant industry here in the US rioting. Both the owners and the servers

there are restaurants that have changed their models to a decent wage for servers and eliminated forced tipping, Most of the workers there prefer it over the alternative

When I retire I want a $15 per hour job at Home Depot. Wear an orange and stand around all day doing nothing is a pretty sweet gig as income supplement.

Nope. Go track when wages started stagnating.

The introduction of the non productive safety net and globalization of markets.

And opening up our southern border and importing lots of cheap labor that put a downward pressure on wages.

I find it funny the same people who whine about wage stagnation are the same ones who advocate for open borders and mass immigration, failing to see the connection between the two.

And hell I'm surprised we're five pages in this topic and no one has brought up the idiocy that is UBI
Why is it idiocy? It makes a hell of a lot more sense than the clusterfrick of entitlements we have now. It cuts government overhead and waste dramatically, and eliminates benefit cliffs.

Agree. But it's way too early for universal

Target low income people and tie it to training and education.

I agree. But if that's the issue we're tackling then there are a lot of other things to fix before minimum wage.

It could be argued that nothing has put downward pressure in wages more than this.

Sadly, it would probably take a generation to see an appreciable difference. The culture (not racial) of low income earners today is abysmal.

The amount of high paying, skilled jobs has plummeted over the last 10 years, people with 4 year degrees are working 2 minimum wage jobs to make ends meet. 30 years ago, you could have 10 kids, be a school teacher, allow your wife to stay home with the kids & own a house and car with no problem. Put someone in the same situation today, do the math, and see how different the outcome is. It shouldn't be $15 per hour in Louisiana, I think thats high, but $10-$12 is a fair number in my opinion considering inflation.

no they're not. Maybe in the 2008-2012 era, but anyone who's making min wage in 2019 is a high schooler or absolutely worthless
