I’m doing Uber and Lyft until I start classes. Using the extra money to pay for the trip to Vegas. Instead of sitting on my arse waiting for classes to start next week I’m making a few extra bucks. I could never do it full time though.

Back in the day (mid-to-late '90s), delivering for Papa John's used to be a great gig in decent markets like Baton Rouge. We made minimum wage, tips, AND like 3-4% of each sale. Most of the drivers were hustlers because hustling paid off. We memorized the neighborhoods that tipped best and knew how to chain multiple orders together to maximize runs. All the shite orders/neighborhoods would get bumped to the newbs. Cutthroat to the max. It was like Glengarry Glen Ross set within the pizza world. I'd drop in to work about 3 hours on a Friday and leave with a fat pocket for the weekend.

A friend of mine owns 5 laundromats. They gross over a million annually and net is just over 40%.
While I get his point, I could also argue that the Wright brothers don't invent flight if they didn't have someone to wash their drawers that week.

They aren't. OP is a moron.

28% of Americans searching for new jobs, according to the Federal Reserve Bank. Highest number of people looking for new jobs in a decade.
People need More money. They can't afford to live on the salaries they have.

Same same.. in the mid 90s as well, but for a different pizza place.. great, fun job, driving around BR blasting my favorite music and making really nice tips.. plus all the free pizza i could eat.. two things that stand out in my mind about that time; one is that nobody wanted to make deliveries to the Louisiana School for the Deaf (i think it was called) b/c they were notoriously bad tippers, or non-tippers.. the other thing , and it’s crazy to think about now, 30 years later- but how i had ZERO fear of delivering pizzas to some of the worst, most high-crime areas in the entire country.. some of those streets outside the Nicholson Gate (?) i think, I remember like Roosevelt and Aster and some others, that have combined to make BR one of the murder capitals of America.. at 18 and 19 i thought nothing of driving there at night, getting out of my car and walking up to some of these paces where a soft kid from the suburbs probably had no business being.. it all turned out ok but if i had a college kid now, no way id let them do that .

People who work for Uber using a vehicle costing them $300 a month and insurance costing them $250. Everywhere I go I see Uber workers getting food or Uber drivers on the road. Wearing down their own vehicles and paying for their own gas to make a few dollars per job. This type of living isn’t sustainable for a country and everyday more and more people seem to be forced to do it. Can you imagine what real unemployment numbers would be if these gig jobs that offer 0 benefits were removed.
I'm always amused at the number of folks who do it in expensive cars. Took uber a couple weeks ago, the guy was driving a brand new Escalade. Very nice ride and the guy seemed happy.

I just remember in college in the mid 90s they had a message on the school sign one time that read "LSD is proud to be drug free"

America first should be a thing, but now damn near half the people in the country believe that mindset is wrong because a former President says it. We are the superpower in the world but for the last 20+ years we haven’t really acted like it economically or when it comes to military actions that were ham-strong from the beginning. Maybe sort of an isolationist belief isn’t that bad, this country has all the power but American companies continue to outsource because it makes sense for them, and that’s the problem. I’m not sorry that I care more about US citizens VS shitholes around the world. This country takes the tax money from all of us and sends it around the world to lots of people that would love to see this country burn to the ground. The rest of the world needs the US more than we need them, but the politicians in DC don’t have the balls to really put America first.

it feels like there are more and more of them every year.
half of them are immigrants who don't speak any english. they walk to the counter or hostess and stick their phone in the employee's face and they're typically some combination of dirty, sweaty, speaking into their knock off airpods, wearing sandals with no socks, and blocking traffic.
someone needs to bring this to Tucker Carlson's attention. he'd be horrified and do a great segment about it.

Well this isn’t entirely true. 17 years ago I had nothing. Started working with a company with 401k and pension. Add up my investments and home equity and I’m a millionaire. A milly ain’t what it used to be but I consider myself rich based on where I started.

ETA: i don’t use Uber often, but most of the drivers I’ve had for nights out on the town all seem to have had normal day jobs and drove for Uber on evenings and weekends for extra money. The drivers that go to and from the airport mostly seem like Uber is their main job.

It's not just full time and they are trying better themselves.
Dad had a friend that was fairly successful and did a time delivering Dimino's for a while when his daughters were in college to keep his lifestyle. At the time he was a manager at a major tire store and now owns the local franchise. He did the gig thing for extra bank when he needed it. Not all gig workers are at their wits end.

These days, that would be the high class residents of those neighborhoods...

I'm grateful for it. Imagine having to deal with dirty cabbies. Ugh they're like public school teachers.
