Japan called it quits. Emperor Hirohito broadcast to the people of Japan, telling them that the war was over and that they would surrender to the Allies.

The reaction in the United States and around the world was typical, with people dancing in the streets all over the planet. But the most iconic photo from that day involved two subjects who, to this very day, remain nameless (though many have come forward to claim it was them):

September 2, 1945
The surrender of Imperial Japan was announced on August 15 and formally signed on September 2, 1945, bringing the hostilities of World War II to a close. By the end of July 1945, the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) was incapable of conducting major operations and an Allied invasion of Japan was imminent.

Hate to burst the bubble but...

quote:

The woman photographed in the iconic picture of a World War II sailor kissing a nurse died Thursday at the age of 92. Greta Zimmer Friedman, identified later as the nurse in the photo, became the subject of perhaps the most iconic photo taken on V-J Day on Aug. 14, 1945. Taken by photographer Alfred Eisentaedt, the picture captured the jubilance people felt upon the war’s end.
quote:

George Mendonsa, who in 2015 confirmed he was the man in the photo, saw Friedman for the first time, spun her around and kissed her. “It wasn’t that much of a kiss,” Friedman, who came forward as the woman in the photo years later, said in a 2005 interview with the Veterans History Project. “It was just somebody celebrating. It wasn’t a romantic event.”

Knew a man that was on the battleship when the signing ceremony transpired.

According to him, a reception had been planned below deck after the signing. However, the Japanese delegation was not keen on the idea of going below deck. Later it was discovered they thought they were being taken below to be executed.

I mean would you not think that? But they should have taken it in stride and accepted the fact theyight be executed for what they had done.
