I'm in oak alley south. Just finished sandbagging. OUr entrance is actually higher than the other one. Doesn't make sense cause outs had more water the other day. But our houses are high. Mine is 17

Most of Oak Alley homes are 16 ft or higer according to LSU ag center map.

Any new info on the road? Also anybody know where we'd see signs of water first? Would it cross a Low spot on 74 onto our side? Or bluff?

It is weird since the other day the main entrance was flooded back to my parents house and the other entrance was dry. That little drainage canal that runs in front of the first house on the left, under 74, then down bluff out to Spanish lake has my parents freaked out. Just know it is going to flood.

Going walk look at the pond. BRB

Water hasn't risen at all. Don't really think this means anything one way or another since I'm all the way on the 73 side. Just fyi

I really think we're good. How many houses back do they live?
Posted on 8/15/16 at 10:31 pm to Schmelly
the front of north entrance is 12 ft and most homes beginning on oak alley dr are all 16 ft

The problem earlier was Spanish lake elementary is in that bayou. It kept that bayou from draining into Spanish lake/bluff swamp. Now it is doing the opposite, keeping bluff swamp from draining across 74 and into New River.

They didn't sand bag anything, just have the boat hooked up to one truck and the camper hooked up to another to leave. I told them leave before you have to use the boat to navigate the road.
If you have a place to go in BR, put valuables up on shelves and get the hell out. If it doesn't flood, then no worries. From what it souds like, if it breaks. Water will start filling quickly.
IMO better to be out and not need it than need to evacuate with flooding water.

Agreed. If you don't have sandbags, a pump, and a generator, there's no need for you to be there. Leave. You cant do anything.
If you do have the above and want to fight it out, get your wife and kids out of there and fight the good fight, but don't get wreckless and get frapped in a flooded house.

Our house is 3-4 Ft above the ground built up on bricks. There was nothing we could do, and if water comes in, everybody is "fricked".

No need to be where?
Posted on 8/15/16 at 10:49 pm to Paul Allen
Ridge road. I wouldn't be there if I didn't have some good defense set up or a high house. I wouldn't want to wake up to my feet hitting an inch of water on the floor.
That's just me though. I missed the prediction on water getting in my house by a full day.

I gotcha. I thought you were talking about neighborhoods off 74

Makes sense. Y'all be safe out there tonight and good luck

The pond near the 2nd entrance of OA is up 2 inches in about 2.5 hours. Another update @ 12a

I was with the Corps of Engineers for a long time, and watching the video of the chinook dropping the sandbags on that road just gave me chills. Not because it was awesome, but because this is an absolute last resort to the road giving way. They must believe that it's going to happen at some point, and judging from the water rushing over the road in the same video I'd give it under 12 hours from that point. I'd 100% be out of the area in a hurry if it were my property being REMOTELY threatened by that road giving way.
I'm not familiar with the size/amount of water that it's holding back or the area surrounding it, so that's just my opinion of course. If it's any sizeable amount, the water will rise extremely fast in low lying areas and quickly in higher areas as the opening continues to erode and grow larger. Mixed with the darkness of nightfall, and that's a potential huge disaster in the making. I'd get out of the area ASAP.

Is that considered a lot?

It's still got a ways to go to get to me. It's 6" over the road. Bout another foot and half before it gets to me!
