It is not a requirement to fly the state flag to recieve funding. If an institution disagrees with a symbol, or similar, of the state, then the state should cut them off? I hope you don't take a stance like this towards government involvement.
Sure. I don't see what the problem that line of thinking is. If you are going to operate under the sovereignty of a state government and receive money from its treasury, you should frick off if you are going to make a gesture that is designed to be a childish affront to the state government. I am not aware of any MS legislation that pertains to this. If no laws exist on the books, I guess no legislator historically ever anticipated a student body doing something of this nature.

And you disagree with my assertion? You don't have many black friends, do you? If you do, tell that to one of them. Its not my assertion that its divisive.
Meh, it's never really come up. Most rational folks (and I acknowledge that they are few and far between these days) realize that a confederate flag being on a state flag is about as relevant as the Union Jack on the Hawaiian flag. Most intelligent people also realize that while it's been hijacked by very small subset of despicably ignorant racists, those that would choose to fly it these days aren't doing so to express bigotry or hatred, but rather southern pride or maybe a sense of rebellion (eg, Dukes of Hazard).

Because they knew it was wrong on at least some level. Seriously, how would they like to be abducted from their homes and sold to the highest bidder, where they can often be beaten within an inch of their life? If they knew the Golden Rule, then they subconsciously knew that slavery was wrong, even if they were benefitting from it.
They knew it was wrong on some level? they told you this? quit putting thoughts and words into dead people that you have never met. Slaves were the labor force, they made the money.. You just don't beat your best employees, you take care of them and treat them well. Now there is always a bad apple in every bunch, it is still that way today (just look at the prisons). Surely misconduct was treated appropriately but it wasn't like they just whipped everyone within arms length. Stop basing historical facts on Django..
Ole Miss was the "Flagship" of the State of Mississippi, now is it just a ship?

Serious question...who is better off...Africans or African Americans?
You keep insinuating our ancestors are the only ones to blame for slavery...I also never here black people condemning their African ancestors for abducting them and selling them into the slave trade...I wonder why that is?
ETA: this whole flag thing isn't about right or wrong it's about recruiting

Your "no black friends" is showing. I kid, but seriously you live under some kind of white rock. I didn't say intelligent and rational people didn't understand the history and current situation surrounding the flag. I said that it was a symbol that was racially divisive in a state struggling to move past its ugly history of discriminating based on race.

Thankfully, the Mississippi state government doesn't share your short-sighted approach to the issue.

What do you mean by "bad apple"? Someone who wasn't down with being enslaved? Do you really think a slave could go up to his master and say, "You know what boss, I know you treat me well and all, but I'm kind of tired of this whole slave thing, so I think I'm going to go somewhere else. Are we cool?" He'd get the shite beat out of him.
There's a reason these slaves stuck around, and it wasn't because it was like "Song of the South". Sure I don't think they beat them unless they were being disobedient (rape certainly though), but how else did they punish the ones that weren't completely on board with the whole "being slaves" idea? Those were in their mind the "bad apples", and these "bad apples" were typically the smart ones who actually thought this through. And they didn't want that, just strong dumb ones who could work hard and not question anything.

There are some good things that came out of slavery: good food, great music, and we're more diversified than we would have been. But this still doesn't justify it.

What exactly is it struggling to move to past in regard to institutionalized racism? This is the mentality that fabricates conflicts that don't already exist.

Kind of dumb, since if any legislators anticipated something like this ever happening, it would be in the books. And sorry I left my whole anti-establishment phase behind in college.

How are we more diversified because of slavery?
The constant racial tension is not what I call diverse and you will disagree but one side chooses to make sure there is tension...when the excuses stop and accountability takes over we will be diverse.

Of course we are more diversified due to slavery, the problem is that we take diversity seriously in everything but opinions. That's where the real problem lies. When you have a diverse country that is willing to listen to diverse ideas, you usually come up with a better idea than a single minded group can as a whole. We're just now highjacking the diversity concept into becoming a single minded nation, which could lead to our destruction. It is America's single greatest aspect is the diversity of opinions which leads to us being the most creative nation on the planet. It's something even Putin has noted as being our greatest aspect that other nations don't have.

How many Africans would have left their native lands if this were the case? Of course this added to the country's diversity. This is really not even a question.

Campus will be packed with flags now. Another unintended consequence of a small group of SJWs trying to control people.

A murderer, rapist... there are bad people in every society, race and class. We get it, slavery is bad, but it was the way of world for a long time and still is today in some places. It's called making the best of a bad situation, which is easier when you go with the flow.
