Your really digging your heels in on this, huh?
Let me put it this way. The students got rid of it because it had become a symbol that make thier friends, colleagues, and other students feel unwelcome at a place/ state that they are all supposed to share.

A murderer, rapist... there are bad people in every society, race and class. We get it, slavery is bad, but it was the way of world for a long time and still is today in some places. It's called making the best of a bad situation, which is easier when you go with the flow.
They brutally beat more than murderers and rapists. They beat any person that questioned the status quo. shite, look at how some parents treat their kids and are brutal towards them. Do you think they're going to treat something they perceive as property any better when it starts fricking up on them?
And also the slave owners tended to be big fans of the later when it came to their "property".

WOW you must not realize how incredibly fricking ironic it is that you said that in this context.

I'll listen to your opinion and debate it. I love debate. I'll tell you exactly where I think you're wrong, and I want you to feel free to let me know on what your opinion is and why I'm wrong. The real social justice warriors wish to silence you completely.

What you fail to acknowledge is that people are beaten everyday, in every place

Well, you got jazz, country, rap, and rock and roll (among others) to listen to.

Well, us for starters. I think you're mistaking cultural diversity for multiculturalism. Cultural diversity just brings more opinions to the table, and we as a society can look at the good and bad of these cultures and take what we want from them.
Multiculturalism though encourages that all cultures are equal, which is of course complete bullshite. If you're a refugee and fleeing to another country, you're probably fleeing to a superior culture. People just don't leave a place where they grew up almost never to return unless they're sure there is a better place for them elsewhere. Multiculturalism though is highly compromising to minorities and lets them get away with shite that should never fly in this country. Yes, you can come to this country and seek a better life for yourself, but we need to establish some ground rules before you come here on how we handle shite in our country. The Asians and European immigrants tend to be fine with this, but we tend to run into a problem with hardcore Muslims and to a lesser extent the Hispanics. They aren't willing to compromise their culture into ours, and we need to tell them that shite doesn't fly.

As if this somehow makes it ok. This is an argument a 3rd grader makes when he's having bad grades.

My problem with your point of view is that you assume they beat everybody for no reason other than that they were a slave. Were they free to go, no, because they where not free (you need to get over this). In rare instances (probably no greater than today) were people beaten, yes..but was it the true hell that hollywood has spelled out for you, probably not
You're delusional if you think this is the case. They didn't stay because they wanted to be there; they stayed because they knew the consequences if they tried to escape. And not just for them, but for their friends and family they'd leave behind. Sure, I don't think they usually actively went out and beat their own property, but if they think their property was getting any funny ideas or questioning the status quo, they absolutely beat them. I don't think there was mandingo fighting since that seems like an incredible waste of money raising a full grown man out of your pocket just to fight to the death for 5 or 6 rich guys, but there was certainly violent retribution for any slave who did not follow their master's order.

quote:No. Some did. Most didn't. I'm not defending slavery but people hesitated to abuse something that they invested a lot of money in and could also kill them in their sleep if they made them angry enough.
And also the slave owners tended to be big fans of the later when it came to their "property".
Indentured servants got it much worse, the Irish especially.

Where did I say they stayed because they wanted to? I said they stayed because they were not free to leave, that is what slavery is. "You need to get over this" was the main point I was trying to make, which you seem to have a hard time understanding. Although you have picked up on the fact that slaves weren't beaten for any reason, which I commend.

I'm saying your point is bullshite and you've bought into a lie your father has told you. It's a fact that slaves were violently intimidated to staying there. You don't have to crucify or execute them to make them do your bidding. There will be a few who stand up, especially in their mid-late teens, and they were very violently punished as a result.
And rape was certainly frequent.
But please go ahead and tell me how all the points on this page are a bunch of lies: LINK

Do u guys know the origin of the word "Ole Miss"
Posted on 10/26/15 at 10:59 pm to OMLandshark
You are why everyone across the state laughs at Ole Miss..... thought and debate. Ole Miss continues to breed this great idea that the university's students/staff are superior to the State's residents with your rhetoric and great intellectuals that you educate at the "Flagship" University. If you "Einsteins" spent more time trying to create "thought" into how to fix the public education system (like USM) or develop something that creates industry (like State) we might take you seriously.
The state legislature has not heard from your super duper student senate on anything in years and now you waste my State's time on the flag? Keep studying your history and slavery rhetoric and I'll keep supporting actual Universities in my State that try to increase my quality of life.

So now you know what every slave owner did to his slaves and to top it off what my own father told me? You never cease to amaze. Then you link a Wikipedia page to prove a point, credible. Hotty Toddy my friend, your ignorance is out of this world.

You are correct on rape, persecution, chains, whips, and long days in the field that comes with slavery. Why do you think those big beautiful buildings and stately oaks got on your campus? From the plantation owners selling widgets? They sold cotton, grain, timber etc. produced from slave labor. Also a majority of your Alumni base are descendants of that, not your student body. So yes let's remove the state flag because it represents the Old South, but also let us remove those beautiful buildings and stately oaks because it represents the Old South.

Oh for frick's sake. First off it was your ancestor's too, so moot point. Secondly, you claim it as "your State", so have at it.
Thirdly only 3 buildings on campus is from that era, and that's the Lyceum, Croft, and the Old Observatory. So I'm guessing you've never stepped foot on Ole Miss' campus to think of that as a valid point.

This is kind of what colleges are supposed to encourage. I know the fine institution of Mississippi State has taught you it's more about cow tipping and hog wrestling, but this isn't how most colleges are.

Is that what it's come to?
