There is no non-racist reason why someone would choose to shoot up a marker that commemorates the murder of a lynching victim whose death was considered a catalyst for the civil rights movement.

Obviously SEC schools/fraternities have long had varying levels of racism. Once upon a time it was quite serious, in recent decades it mostly comes out as an edgy phase by well to do kids where it's cool/funny to sing some David Allen Coe see who can go the furthest without alienating everyone. It was that way when I was in school and I'm guessing it's still around. Most people probably don't go into it with any legitimately racist views and few of them carry any legitimately racist views with them into adult life.
But it probably emboldens idiots like this to ruin their life. They took that photo because they knew they'd get some likes from other people who would go "oh shite hahahaha." They're a symptom of a dumb, immature southern schtick that won't die off fast enough.
IMO this shite is different from normal, clever political incorrectness (which I'll never condemn).

I don't know what future consequences will come to them.
If it was my kid, I'd remind him of the time I told him actions have consequences. When you do something really stupid, you will probably have consequences, and that's on the kid who made decisions.
Take personal responsibility, don't blame SJW's. These kids are old enough to know doing this was bad.

It's not a hate crime in the sense it's meant to intimidate black people
