Rounding up shopping carts in the parking lot provides gainful employment for people who may not be qualified for anything else.
I rounded up carts at one point in my life, of course I was only 16. I surly appreciated when people put them in the designated areas that summer. The dairy section was a huge upgrade from bagging and chasing shopping carts in 90 degree weather.

Depends on my situation. If I'm by myself, I most always return. If my youngest kids (2&4) are with me, I don't return it, as I'm not turning my back on my young ones or leaving them unattended while I walk across the way to put a buggy away. I've instructed my wife to do the same, but be aware of her surroundings and leave the buggy if it doesnt feel right.
I know this is hard to grasp but there’s parking spots literally next to the cart return bins. You could maybe park there next to them?

As someone who sat in their truck and watched a vehicle leave their cart, back into it and send it speeding into my door…yes, there are people that will kill you for leaving it

The “shopping cart theory” is the dumbest thing ever. Stores don’t care. Cart guys don’t care. (I’ve asked both). The only people who care if you pick up your cart are not are people who think picking up your cart is the end all be all judge of humanity.
The real test is who cleans up after themselves at a stadium.
ETA: I don’t care one way or the other but people who judge embolden me to not pick them up.

Do any big retailers offer a bounty or reward for returning stolen buggies?

I always put my cart up, it’s the right thing to do and takes me very minimal effort.
Even with my kids I put it up, I just lugged them around the store why can’t I put it up with them? Hell my 4yr helps me put it up sometimes.

That’s ridiculous. If the store doesn’t put out corrals then you shouldn’t be expected to bring it back inside. Nobody would do that unless you’re in a tiny parking lot with the store 50 feet away.
Look if you’re a fat, lazy piece of shite just say you’re a fat, lazy piece of shite.

You are not allowed to put shopping carts in a roll-off dumpster when cleaning up a blighted area that was occupied by zombies err err i mean homeless people.
I don't think the store wants it back either. If it's in good shape with 4 proper wheels I may keep it and use it for a personal buggy. Like bringing your own bags or a personal golf cart to the golf course.

I put the shopping cart in the corral 99% of the time - but to say this theory is an indicator of whether or not someone is a good or bad member of society is dumb

I feel like there is definitely a few people on the O-T who never returns the cart.
There is a guy at Aldi that walks around the parking lot and he will tell you Ill take your cart back for you. But he is doing it to get the quarter back.
I wonder how much he makes in a day.
But I usually try to not use a cart. I might look like a sherpa with 25 bags in my hands...

If you don’t use a cart how do hold 25 bags of stuff while walking through the store before checking out

It's really not.
There's no issue getting the kid from the parking lot into the store, so there's no logic that they can't get the kids to and from the cart corral.
When I had kids that age, the couple of times I had to handle both at the same time, I'd pull up to a grocery cart already in the lot for that purpose...so I could put the little one in the front part.
And, when I couldn't, I always felt a little vulnerable wiht the kids from a safety standpoint. I simply can't blame a mother for choosing not to do that. Safety of the children is parmount.

I do it every single time.

I return it to set an example. and I get a little extra exersize. It's not that hard to do.
