Any advice?
If you have to come to the OT for this kind of advice because you can't figure it out, I suspect you are not much of a manager yourself.

Yes, I'm has manager. I've called meetings for him so that he can see how when you get people together it's easy to knock stuff out esp procedure type updates and reviews.
Two weeks later, he'll be back to sending out emails and having stuff linger again, missing deadlines.
There's a reason you are the manager and he isn't. Not everyone is management material. You can't expect all of your direct reports to be as smart and efficient as you. Consider the fact that maybe you are the one that needs additional training on people management techniques. I'm not even being a dick, I'm serious.

Well, for one, I didn't hire the guy. Two, I don't mind grooming or helping people along, but this is a senior level employee making almost twice as much as lower level guys who are a whole lot more efficient. It's always been my take that a senior level employee shouldnt need to be micro managed.

Have you formally placed him on a Performance Improvement Plan?
How old is he? Is it possible he is starting to experience the beginning stages of mental disability that usually come with getting older?
Any chance he is an alkie?

Yet Millennials think an eight hour work day involves two hours of social media time.
Probably because they can get 8 hours of work done in 6 hours.

Sounds like you need to be more direct with him if he is missing deadlines.

I have two millennials that have reported to me. One was a sniveling little shite, a perfect caricature of the worst kind of millennial, was decent enough at his job to overcome his horrible attitude, he never fricked up enough to warrant firing, so I ended up getting him transferred to another department more suited for his bad attitude. The other millennial is still here, is a hard worker, always early, stays late, happily accepts additional work and responsibilities, never bitches or complains, and I guarantee you this guy will be running the place in 10-15 years.
Smart millennials have an advantage that they don't understand right now... because so many of you are shitty, you can stand out very easily just by simply having a positive attitude and doing basic shite like showing up on time and working late every once in a while, volunteer to do some extra shite. You can soar..... that's why it's ok for yall to take a low level job fetching coffee, you move up quickly if you do basic level shite outlined above.

If so they should do extra work since they are being paid, not jack off on facebook for two hours.
^ this is the problem with America, lazy pricks.

We have a 66 year old guy here like this. I think this biggest thing I've noticed about him, and others his age range, is the struggle they have with multi-tasking. For some reason, they want to stay locked in on one thing at a time until it's done and do not do well when given 7-8 different plates to spin simultaneously. He really has a hard time responding timely to multiple emails/VMs with good information about unrelated items/tasks.

Couldn't have said it better myself. So many huge corporations are (literally) dying for millennial talent.
As a millennial who has made huge gains the past 6 years in my profession (starting as an intern) I can vouch. Don't be an entitled frick, work hard and you will indeed soar.

Multi-tasking is a myth.
It’s more like a karate fight of one guy against eight. You get killed if you’re don’t do the one thing at a time, very fast and very efficiently.
My guess is your operation needs better technology and processes. Sounds disorganized and chaotic as hell. Count me out. Poor guy.

The summer of 2014 I gave this speech to my millennial brother in law who was bitching about not moving up at his company even though he works circles around everyone, even though he had only been there 6 months. Luckily for him, he took my advice, changed his attitude, and now, 3 years later, he is the GM of the place and making bank for a single guy in his 20's, nice fancy pad in Buckhead, living the greatest years of his life. All he had to do was change his attitude.
I figure his dad owes me money for my life coaching his son to success.

Depending on how big his dick is at the company, OP should pitch a re-org to the VP and eliminate this old guy with a severance based on years served, so he gets a nice check. Then replace him with a millennial at half the pay, get twice the work out of him, slap together a power point showing an ROI of 24 months. If OP starts putting it together now, he can probably have the guy laid off by next Christmas, just in time to get a visit from the ghost of Jacob Marley.

Sounds like the OP now has his own action plan.
Posted on 12/28/17 at 10:39 am to PortHudsonPlaya
You’ve called meetings to show him how to do things or you’ve sat down with him and told him how you expect things to be done? Those are two entirely different things.
Do the people in your department call their own meetings or is this a management thing? If everyone is calling their own meetings, that can also be inefficient.
If he sends out redlines and it takes forever to get info back, then perhaps you need to discuss turn around time at one of your next meetings.
If he has deadlines to meet, make sure they are clearly stated and have status meetings to see where he stands.
Sounds like lots of things can be done to help with his efficiency.

Is he 55+? He may be biding his time until retirement.
