The Lafayette nostalgia thread reminded me of an old map of the city I picked up many years ago at a flea market in Alabama. I don't know the exact year of this map, but the school was still named Southwestern Louisiana Institute. Notice there was no East Bayou Parkway and West Bayou Parkway ran for only a couple of blocks.

So Jefferson Street used to be Oak Avenue? Interesting.

You Dusty ol' cowpoke. Remember the rodeos they used to have at the old fairgrounds?

Good times...

Interesting. I used to live on St Thomas between Congress and Souvenir Gate. Back then on this map it was called Gail. I had no idea.

East Bayou is there too, for only a couple blocks. It doesn’t make sense that they’d start those roads where they are shown on the map, so maybe the map just doesn’t show the whole roads for some reason.

They have an old aerial view photo from the 40's in the rectory at Fatima.

At least they used to.

Are there any dates on the map ? Trying to put 2 and 2 together for an approximate age. Here’s some info to ponder on possible map date. John E Chance left Sun Oil and started his survey business in 1957 when he was 33 yrs old. He used his family name for “Chance Street” which is in between and parallels Bertrand & S. College. Basically one block over from Deano’s on Bertrand.

Based on this info, the map was likely printed some time after 1957, perhaps early 60’s ??? Maybe some Laffy old timers can help with dating the map. If we can confirm when Congress Street was constructed, we can get a date in between 1957 and 19_ _ ?

Edit: upon closer inspection, appears that W. Congress St. starts downtown and stops after several blocks. Does not extend to “Edward Street” ??? which runs in front of Lafayette HS.

The blank open spaces with no street names is property owned by the University where the horse farm, CajunDome, Cajun Field, USFW Research Center, and LITE Center are currently located.

I've never been able to establish a date. When I first acquired it about 25 years ago I showed it to a couple of older residents - they weren't able to pinpoint a date either but thought it was probably from the 1960s.

UL is still referred to as SLI, so at least pre 1960.

And Lafayette High is in its current location, which was built in 1952, that and someone mentioning Chance St being named by John Chance around 1957 would put the map more than likely in the late 50s

Solid info as we’ve narrowed it down from 1957-1959.

It’s a really old map. Evangeline thruway isn’t even on the map yet. What is Hwy 182 today heading south is hwy 90 on that map. The thruway was built in the 60’s and no where mentioned on the map.
