The issue is that supplies shouldn't be lumped in a school budget with stuff like utility cost, custodial supplies, etc. All it does it covers up the actual cost of a student in the classroom even with minimal supplies.

They change classes in third grade, usually only twice. At least here they do

no one will say the reasons public education has declined:
1. We no longer have a slave population of women who are forced to become teachers if they want to work. The best qualified women take other jobs
2. I will be banned if I give this reason

100-$150/kid on supplies (assuming a 20 kid class). That's a lot of crayolas, #2 pencils, and wide ruled paper. And that's assuming all 20 kids need supplies.
And it isn't just stuff for the actual kids. You generally have to decorate the room. Maybe more so elementary than others though

I can tell you already I've spent money on paint to paint my room, pencils, erasers, my own pencil sharpener, loose leaf paper, paper towels, Kleenex, hand wipes, paper clips, Staples, glue, colors, construction paper, and books for my classroom.
Then why the frick are the kids required to bring all this shite day 1?

I used to work at a school while I was in college, a lot of the people that worked there made good side money with all the free time.
Definitely changed my perspective on the "poor teachers" narrative. They have a lot of time and opportunity for side hustles.

Because what is brought covers maybe the first month of school.
On the HS it gets even sillier. Parents want all this crazy shite for prom, graduation, field trips, homecoming, etc. but don't want to help provide for it. I can't tell you how many people bitch about HS fees.

I can only speak from personal experience but most kids bring 1 pack of everything and they're usually out by Thanksgiving or Christmas. Some parents will restock their kids but the reality is most won't

Teach at private school then

Actually the solution would be to raise teacher salary and the standards to teach. Quit making it a general studies degree and have it actually be in a subject field. Then pay teachers accordingly based on what type of degree they've obtained.

And make less yet still have to buy certain things? No thanks

And make as much as a cook at McDonald's?
My wife actually makes a decent salary 55k
But it's absurd she has to spend so much on her job.
You know how much $ I've spent on my work supplies out of pocket in 11 years? $0

My wife is a retired teacher. She spent over $500-1000 out of her pocket for supplies, and to buy meals and stuff for kids in her class who didn't have them.
Very commonplace especially in rural districts. School finance here in Texas has never been as hot a topic as it is right now. Teachers are underfunded and that's just a fact.

Your math makes no sense...if the breaks where four months, would her annual salary be higher?? The breaks are irrelevant, she still gets paid the same.

Loose leaf paper is $2.50 for 500 sheets per walmarts website. I'm sure pencils are cheap as well. Are you telling me that teaches go thru that many sticks of paste, crayons, construction paper? And decorating a classroom should be a one time cost, not an annual cost. Hell, have the kids make the decorations for free.

AYFKM?? That's the alternative for needing Kleenex and you name it in a classroom? Do you own a home and pay school tax by chance? No way you do. None. If you did you would be more upset about the system and the nightmare it is for public educators.

What would the kids make them out of?
And here in Kentucky when you're a school that's state audited, they want to see rotating displays with school work, the content you're working on at the time of audit (and after if they come back in a few weeks later), etc. They want standards listed and addressed. They want student data listed in visible places as well (which is routinely changing).
This isn't just throwing up some cute owls and apples on a bulletin board.

Decorating is annual, mainly because you do a different theme or have to replace each year. For me it has never cost much but I have a new room this year.
I went through at least 15 packs of paper and 5 boxes of pencils last year. Yes what I didn't use I save but glue, colors, folders, clear inserts, index cards, it all starts to add up

Annual salary is commonly considered to be the amount paid over 2080 hrs, or 52 weeks. She is not working that long, so it is a bit misleading to me to say she makes $35k per year. She makes $35k per 9 months or so.

I'd give her a copy of my most recent property tax bill.
