It sounds like the horse is out of the barn if he's getting chemo. I'm pretty sure they only do chemo if the cancer has spread to the lymph nodes and/or pelvic girdle.
I think if the cancer is still within the prostate the prostate is removed surgically or treated with radiation. Or that's how I remember it.

Yep. In most cases, if chemo is the treatment, the cancer has spread out from the gland. And that's not good. In common cases, it goes from the gland to the bones, & that's really not good.
