The U.S. government filed a lawsuit on Wednesday to stop Halliburton Co (HAL.N) from buying Baker Hughes Inc (BHI.N), arguing the combination of the No. 2 and No. 3 oil services companies would lead to higher prices in the sector.
The move, which comes after months of talks on divestitures of some overlapping businesses, significantly cuts the chances of the deal going through, although Halliburton said it would "vigorously contest" the lawsuit.
The Justice Department said the merger, valued at $35 billion when it was first announced in November 2014, would leave only two dominant suppliers in 20 business lines in the global well drilling and oil construction services industry, with Schlumberger NV (SLB.N) being one of the two.

Truck nut prices will skyrocket as a result.
That's what it's really all about. Truck nuts.

The government sues to keep from creating Oil Field Service giants, but forced big banks to combine after they were already too powerful. Gotcha.

Does this mean that the baws can go back to work so that Jody can get back to plowing their wives?

combine HAL and BHI and they would still be short of Schlumberger's Market Cap
the market cant bear higher prices anyway

SLB would only trail HALN by a billion or so if the merger happened.

Not true, Hal would still be behind SLB (unless SLB has recently been devalued due to this market).

Halliburton would still be behind Schlumberger by a pretty healthy amount
I believe it was about half the market share of Schlumberger if they merged

But Bernie Sanders told me having fewer choices is better for everyone.
