In LA all you need is GL, Comp, and pass the test at the contractor board. I took mine 14 years ago so I am not sure how much it has changed but it's not too bad if you have some common sense. I took an online class from Bob Brooks then went to his class in BR the day before to take a few practice test.
Honestly the biggest obstacle is the insurance cost.
Also, if you are just flipping you might want to look into getting the remodelers license. The requirements aren't as stringent and you can do any work up to $50K excluding new construction IIRC.

I didn't either but I was able to do it when I worked for him, no way could I do it as a career but if there was nothing else yes.

Yea it's just a registration and no test. The insurance requirements are lower and I was wrong on what you can do. It's up to $75K now.

What does this registration cover?
Home Improvement projects with a value exceeding $7,500 but not in excess of $75,000 including labor and materials. This registration does NOT cover swimming pools.
It used to be $15 and $50.

I mean it sucks but there's a reason they call it a boom-- jobs like those in ND and LA were never going to be permanent, I just the communities in those states actually saved the money and/or pumped it into infrastructure this time instead of blowing it like parts of Texas and Eastern Montana did in the 80s.

Find a stable job market. Did people not expect prices to drop? Sounds like the fats being trimmed. Good.

In my life time, I saw four oil booms/bust. This time around, it is going to last a couple years, if not longer.

Always have a backup plan. Always be building different skill sets and expanding your contact base.

As soon as supply drops below demand the same twats who are crowing over the oil and gas labor layoffs will be back crying like bitches they about being gouged for fuel.
It is a cyclic industry just like many others, high risk high reward, either learn to cope or go drive a big truck.
By the way some places are hiring rigs and people as fast as they can.

ND is a boom job since that has all blown up in the last several years. They are literally living in like trailer cities and stuff. I wouldn't call LA boom jobs. Oilfield has been going on for decades here. Sometimes it's better than others, but it's not like our industry was built overnight.

I don't. Maybe I'll just forget the Churchill quotes and buy you a couple of good stiff drinks instead.

I built the only upstart Sevice Company in the Tuscaloosa Marine Shale. We made it to the very end. I still have Company men working. They are just spread out from New Mexico to Alabama. Engineers & Superintendents that I pretty much begged for work are calling me now for work. I've lost a great hand to suicide & some are in jail. I now I'm not the only one but I feel like I'm Ground Zero for the down turn. I created a family / gang atmosphere with my employees. Us against the world. Now I can't do anything for them. It hurts. VP to Lawn Care.

Here in SC we aren't as affected by it (obviously) as you guys, but I have enjoyed the cheaper gas. Saves me $150/month. That's real money.
But I do hate it for everyone affected negatively. But when gas is $3.30/gal again and everyone in LA is fat and happy, remember that somewhere, someone can't afford to fill their tank.
