I thought this was going to be a math question. Give you the prevention rates of each form of contraception, the probability of her getting pregnant, the probability that the child is retarded, and then you have to answer with the percent chance that they have a retarded baby.

What’s bizarre is that this took place in a high school English class.
This is actually a fairly classic survey question for researchers in fields such as moral psychology. I’m guessing this teacher got these questions from a book or research paper.

I’d like to see the other questions. The incest one is bizarre and fireable. The rabbit one provokes discussion. As someone mentioned, if it’s a cooking show, is it okay?
Those scenarios should be used to help students engage in critical thinking and to use concrete details and commentary to argue a position. Most students would obviously say “no way” to killing the rabbit, but if one brings up the cooking show, then you’ve got a debate going.
