Way to many people are reading things to fit their preconceived notions.
As already stated, the perp was in the wrong as was the cop. The perp is dead so not much else can be done to him. The cop on the other hand, hopefully, has a long road of court proceedings ahead of her.
The point out of all of this is far too many cops are in a rush to grab their guns in situations that do not warrant it. And far too many support the bad results that come from those actions.
I'm one of the few conservatives that understands what the police are. ie-Agents of the government. I do not support the free passes they far too often receive when they either screw up or wantonly abuse their power.
And just because it hasn't happened to you doesn't mean it won't in the future.

Except that the air freshener was against the law, it's been established that it is illegal to have anything hanging from the windshield/rearview.
The stop escalated when he was asked to exit the vehicle once they found he had a bench warrant out for having an unregistered weapon and failing to appear for his court date last year. When he tried to run the cop made a fire-able and chargeable mistake of grabbing her firearm opposed to her taser which she says she is deploying. Both the officer and young man are at fault.

How is the unregisteted weapon not a felony?

Without knowing Minneapolis law I would assume it was legally obtained, but just not legally registered. Possibly the semantics of not filing all paperwork kept it a misdemeanor, or a DA didn't want to ruin the young man's life with a felony hanging over his head for a bad decision made at 18/19.

The police version is he had expired tags, which if the car was registered in his name, led them to discover he had an outstanding warrant for a gun charge.
