You know what else isn't that big of a deal?

A football game.

No one is making you go or even be part of a wedding. You can always refuse those weddings that interfere with your hobbies.

You're right, no one is "making" me go. Which is why I don't attend fall weddings. However, it causes idiotic drama between friends/family that could be completely avoided by having some decency & consideration for a few/dozens/hundreds of people.

More people will remember & care about the/any game than they will your insignificant "day". So why put people in a position to have to choose & deal with the drama?

I got married in October 2012....LSU played South Carolina that day.

Wasn't an issue to any of my LSU loving friends. They had a blast at my beach wedding (and kept up with the score on their phones). Many of them happy to have an excuse for a beach weekend getaway. Everyone at my wedding got to take home leftover alcohol (many walked away with unopened bottles of wine or other types of liquor). Majority of my guests aren't that big on college football though (many from AZ where my husband is from....people just are not into college football out here as big as in the South).

October is one of my favorite months, so that's why I got married then. I'm happy to have my anniversary during that month. I'm more able to take off work that month for anniversary trips than other months.

Not that you could really prove this, but how many people RSVP'd "No" to your wedding?
Unless you ONLY invited the wedding party & immediate family, I'd wager more than 25 people +/- SO's declined due to location or football.

You went full selfish wedding mode: fall & destination wedding.

I only invited like 30 people to my wedding. Very small wedding. Immediate family and very close friends only (and their children and SOs/spouses). Only my sister and my husband's best friend our wedding party.

Destination wedding was a very simple and inexpensive wedding in Destin.....gave me my beach wedding I had always wanted but allowed for my friends and family from LA to be able to drive there(my immediate family are poor and could not have afforded airfare). Because it was in October there were no crowds on the beach, no traffic, and everyone able to find hotels for cheap (off season rates).

The people that didn't go.....only declined cause they couldn't afford to go(and were all guests living in AZ). All the guests from LA that were invited were there.

Sounds like a good time.

But surely you realize your wedding is against the norm of a fall wedding by location & invite size alone.

Even still, you can't tell us that the football comment(s) wasn't made by at least 1 person, an LSU connected person at that.

Only football comment I got at the wedding was one of my best friends telling me LSU was winning.

Same person that is a diehard LSU fan. Even he said some things are more important than a football game and that he wouldn't miss my wedding for anything.

I understand your point though, I just don't think it's that big of a deal. Maybe cause I've lived away from the South for so long and no longer am around such a football obsessed culture/community. It just seems almost kinda childish to me for people to get so upset over this topic.

He said all the rigbt things because his wife/SO was there too, right...? Ha!

I know the rest of the country isn't football obsessed like we are in the South. But calling how/what people are passionate about & spend a good deal of money on as childish is a bit over the top.

100,000s of people across a region can't be that wrong...I mean, 10 SJWs can be wrong but thwy get their way these days...

Being passionate about football isn't childish.

Expecting other people, who may not be as passionate about football, to plan major events in their lives around your hobby and get upset when they don't is childish.

You also need to know your audience though. If your family and friends are big into football it will create an unfriendly atmosphere. Especially if it is a big conference game people have been looking forward to. Now if it's like LSU playing against North Texas it shouldn't be a problem. People will still be checking the scores of the other big games, but it won't create a stressful situation. Weddings for the bride and groom are stressful enough already and it's just another hurdle to overcome.

If everyone you invite is an LSU fan, it seems the bye week is a natural fit for a fall wedding.

Yes some people plan to go to their beach condos that weekend but most people are good with no LSU game conflict.

I tried to avoid this very issue by having a June wedding. I chose a weekend in June at random and a time at random. No issues, right?

False. The 2000 College World Series was wrapping up at that very time. I was so wrapped up in wedding stuff that no one told me, or we'd have tried to have TVs at the reception. As it was, there were a handful of radio listeners during the wedding who relayed the score & win to everyone at the reception.

We were across the street from the venue taking photos in the church when we heard the biggest roar from the crowd. Final score was just announced.

Only major conflict now is, anniversary competes with Father's Day.

Don't you think if people expect you to attend their wedding and bring a gift, that you should show some consideration in scheduling it?

Something is always going on. The couple should pick the date that works best for them Don't like the day it scheduled, don't go. It's really not complicated. But expecting someone to schedule their wedding around your precious football game is ridiculous.

I mean otherwise just go down to the courthouse and get married. It only takes two people to get married.

Just no.

If you want to have the big wedding and reception and all the hoorah, don't schedule it during football season and such in Louisiana

That's a great opinion. My wedding in fall of 2013 was awesome and enjoyed by everyone that went.

You think they enjoyed it, but they probably made snide remarks about you behind your back. And yes it only takes two people to get married. No one else has to be there.

And while it's their day, what's funny is how many others are included and have to spend money as well. Remember the thread a couple of days ago about the idiot who was having a cruise ship wedding and making his groomsmen buy their own tux. For it being just about two people, a whole bunch others had to jump through some hoops. What's wrong with trying to be a little aware of scheduling conflicts. You can't make everyone happy but you can make most with that simple suggestion.

We were met with the same question. Bye week or far away game in October?
We went with away game because so much other stuff happens on bye weeks. It was the right call. Guests felt the same way.

Our wedding is October 22nd.

Who gives a shite what else is going on? If people would rather go to the game I have no problem with that.
