quote:

Ochsner is getting into the charter school business. Louisiana’s largest non-profit academic health care system is joining forces with the operator of Kenner Discovery Health Sciences Academy to start kindergarten through third-grade classes in 2020 at an interim Old Jefferson site, with plans to move the following year to a new campus about a mile away and expand to eighth grade.

This is neat. Ochsner is successful and so is Kenner Discovery. Will be interesting to see them partner on this.

But, in the article itself, is a very interesting comment.

quote:

The Ochsner employee benefit underscores a common lament of business leaders who are active in education politics: Big corporations balk at moving to or expanding in Jefferson because the overall C grade for its public school system, Louisiana’s largest, seems mediocre and their executives flinch at the thought of paying private school tuition.

quote:

Half the seats will be reserved for children of Ochsner Health System employees who live in Jefferson Parish, the other half for non-employee children who live in Jefferson Parish, with preference for those living in the neighborhood.

Could this be the start of something here?

1) Major company wants to locate in Louisiana, but is worried about the schools

2) Major company builds a school, and links up with a charter school operator. Major company reserves half their seats for children of their employees (when universities do this, they can only reserve half under state law).

3) Company is run with public dollars as a public school, but with heavy influence from the company.

It's an interesting concept.

OLOL runs a pretty interesting school in BR. It's a private school but the students intern at businesses for free and the business pays their tuition rather than a paycheck. We sponsor one of these kids.

They get some real world experience. I made the kid come sit in and watch us conduct an interview once.

I guess Ochsner is having trouble funneling all their profits into new hospitals to keep their non profit tax status

That’s a loop hole that needs to be closed

Well nobody, major company or not, wants to pay taxes and make donations for shitty schools.

This doesn't make sense if we're talking about school children, can you clarify?

Is that Cristo Rey? Isn't that for high risk inner-city kids?

Yeah that's it. I don't know about high risk but I do think it's for lower income kids.

Everyone that downvoted my post explain the logic of this...

Ochsner is “not-for-profit”

Yet they use hundreds of millions of dollars in profits to buy up hospitals and providers to expand their empire. Small providers can’t compete with such a large entity that doesn’t pay taxes.

Ochsner is so flush with cash they just can’t figure out ways to spend it fast enough so that they don’t show a profit.

Not having healthy and fair competition in healthcare is a bad thing. And that’s where we are headed.

May be funneling those profits into LSU athletics. Definitely need to close that loophole.

So?

Plenty of non profit hospitals do the same and this has no impact on that status.

You’re a CEO looking to expand or relocate to the South-Central US. Do you choose Louisiana or Texas?

Texas:
Good school districts all over the state.
No state income taxes (property taxes are steep)
Less government red tape and B.S.
Tons of educated and qualified job applicants

Louisiana:
Very few decent areas to live, and even fewer good school districts for not only your family, but also your employees.
State income tax.
Most quality prospective employees have fled the state.
Government red tape and politicians around every corner with their hand out.

And charter schools are a good idea in theory, but they are quickly devolving into a money making scheme for the politically connected.

They just took over the University Health hospitals in Shreveport and Monroe. It was either them or Willis-Knighton. Would rather them than WK, who already had a near monopoly in Shreveport.
