KATC LGMC Ochsner

Well this should shake things up big time in the health care industry in Laffy. Keep in mind, Lafayette General Health owns hospitals and clinics all over Acadiana.

Keeping up with HCA’s local footprint?

ETA: HCA exited the Lafayette market last year when they sold Women & Children’s.

Great. Now they’ll be another place we can’t smoke anymore.

Which is a very good thing. I have many dealing with them and I found they are the best.

I agree. This will provide more effective competition for the Franciscan missionaries (Our Lady of the Lake, Our Lady of Lourdes, etc.), which is a poorly run organization.

Good place to work if you like to be unsafely overworked and underpaid.

Being a patient there is a toss up. My last experience was terrible.

Ochsner has some incredible doctors and facilities.

The issue is competition, or lack thereof. They take over every aspect of health care in each area they expand into. As someone who works in the Ochsner system I can tell you it's NOT a good thing.

No, I am not, but they saved my life many times. I can not thank them enough.

Yes, it's not a good thing of one company to take over.

Not entirely surprising. Hospital consolidation is becoming more common. Before I moved from Lake Charles, Ochsner was already starting to enter the market there. And they have a lot of land to continue to build on in Baton Rouge now.

They've taken over Jefferson Highway just outside the Orleans Parish line for blocks on end with their buying property and putting up medical buildings.

They've also bought a lot of medical buildings in the N.O. area and brought them under their name.

I wonder if this is going to be a complete take over like Teche in Morgan City or a soft takeover like Terrebonne General.

With Teche, it was a buyout and a lease, and with Terrebonne General it was a “strategic partnership” where they are member of the group so they have access to Ochsner pricing for wholesale supplies and software. They could also call on Ochsner for help in other realms. Overall, TGMC stays in charge of itself.

The General Health System owns or is affiliated with 3 hospitals in Lafayette, also Opelousas, New Iberia, Kaplan, St Martin, and Crowley. Would not be surprised if Abbeville, Jennings, Ville Platte and Eunice get sucked into this megamonopoly at some point.

Sounds like this is more of a soft takeover.

I like Ochsner just fine, but the fact that most places only have a couple of options these days, if that, isn't a good thing.

I know a number of people who work in their facilities. The pay is good and the work is good, and they have no tolerance for laziness or not following the rules. A family member of mine, who got high annual reviews, was terminated immediately for a simple mistake, and told she could not be rehired for 5 years.

IMHO Ochsner is not a good place to be a Doctor or according to some nurses I've know not a good place to work. But if you're an overpaid administrator it's probably good

All that Amway money that Alton brings in has to be reinvested somewhere and that somewhere is helping finance the Oschner expansion

Pay at Ocshner is below average for Doctors and nurses.

I worked for them and I hated it. Glad I got out of there. They get doctors right out of school and pay them poorly, along with everybody else.

How long ago have you worked there? This simply isn't true now. My wife works there and they spend a ton of money to recruit top doctors away from other hospitals. Some of the top doctors are leaving other hospitals to come to Oschner. That isn't happening because they pay so little. Oschner has a minimum wage of $12 even for their lowest of support staffs. And ochsner of Baton Rouge is winning national awards for their medical performances. Nationally their medical performance is some of the best and winning awards that none of the other hospitals are even thought of. But don't let facts stop yall. I've also been a patient of Ochsner for a long time and have taken very good care of me. They also have a lot of people leave ochsner but come back saying they wish they had never left...doctors, nurses, and administration.
