I know I smoke so much because of my anxiety. It's not perfect, but it helps. But when I tried medication, I pretty much lost all impulse control. I got laid a ton, but it created plenty of other problems.

No. Your life will be ruined if your house burns down because you left the stove on...

You DID turn it off, didn't you??

we have a creepy number of things in common.

Like almost every single thing you mentioned.

I used to be a professional poker player but transitioned to data analysis and am much happier.

I also became much happier as I gradually realized that human beings are simply not wired to be alone. You cannot isolate and be happy, it is impossible. You have to force yourself into situations that are at first uncomfortable or irritating, with the end state in mind. Do you over analyze interactions with your oldest high school buddies or your parents/siblings? No, because you know them so well.

Also, and this is more important than anything else, have you answered this question:

Why are you alive?

Most people never answer it. Most people do not want to dive in to their own consciousness. I had to put a gun to the roof of my mouth to get an answer.

People ask, what is the meaning of life? It's the wrong question. Life is a noun, just a characteristic of this planet. What is the meaning of a river? A river does not have meaning, it just is. The only relevant question is, what is the meaning of your life? Stories have meaning, nouns do not.

The other requirement is to set definite goals for yourself. Because once you answer that question, and have a clear goal in front of you that you can zero in on (which is who you want to be), all the extraneous bullshite in your peripherals falls away. Or at least enough so that you can function.

It did for me anyway. Hope that helps, and good luck

There are professionals who help people like you for a living. If your teeth hurt see a dentist. If OCD is ruining your life see a psychiatrist.

Real OCD is a real son of a bitch and can be truly debilitating.

The worst symptoms are the intrusive thoughts, the thoughts that something horrible is going to happen or that you are going to cause harm to others even though you know it'd never happen. That shite is terrible.

I agree with this. Very important point. If you establish clear, attainable goals, it focuses your mind and blocks out a lot of stuff that clouds your thinking. I used to laugh at "To DO' lists, but now I have them at work to keep me focused. It calms down anxiety to check off an item on the list or to attain a goal.

I agree with this. I've dealt with OCD my entire adult life. Been put on different meds therapy etc.

Best therapy I got was dating a slob for a year. Bitch semi broke my OCD to the point I cope.

Agree and this worked for me for a while. Now I have basically none of my work that is scheduled so it's still a struggle. fricking work emails are the worst. When I see emails roll across every 30 seconds it makes me crazy. I want to solve every problem immediately and it becomes impossible to unwind.

Anxiety is something I've battled off and in for years, but things got worse around the time my second kid was born in the spring. I've been medicated for other stuff, but this is my first time taking something specifically for the anxiety.

What are you taking? My anxiety sky rocketed when my first child was born.

What helped me is constantly keeping occupied, not even a second to analyze bull shite. Video games was a great outlet for this since its pretty cognitively active, and once that started getting old just got super into fitness. Don't let yourself be idle, I think most cognitive disorders are a result of the fact that all obstacles to survival are virtually gone and now all we do is sit around and think. It's why suicide rates plummet in disaster scenarios and mental health drastically improved
