I’ve suffered with it since I was a teenager. It is debilitating most times. Ruins a lot of times that should be fun.

I’m not a Dr. & have no clue what I’m talking about but that doesn’t sound like what I thought OCD is

It sounds like depression
Has he had a 2nd opinion?
Has he had a complete lab work up done?

I hope he is getting help & that he is able to move forward

Closet is organized by style of shirt, color and all are on same color hangers. Pants/shorts same. Shoes are all separated. Everything is put away after being used on my office desk and cleaned. It can be annoying. I know it’s probably not true OCD, but I think I have some tendencies.

This is the difference between legit OCD diagnosis and someone who just likes everything clean. It affects relationships, jobs, your children and spouse, etc. And there is no way to stop. Medication can sometimes improve it but nothing makes it go away.

There inpatient and outpatient support.

It takes work and usually medication to get it under control. Wishing it to go away doesn’t work.

I always separate M&Ms by color and then eat them from smallest group to largest. Teddy Grahams get limbs bitten off first. And light switches have to be all up or all down. All of my cds, dvds and bluray discs are alphabetized.

My oldest son. His teacher brought it to our attention about 3 years ago. It is a form called Intrusive Thought OCD. It was rough at first and we had no idea what was going on. He saw a therapist and was taught some coping mechanisms. It has helped immensely.

A lot of people like things a certain way, order, or they’re very neat. That isn’t usually OCD. OCD stems from unreasonable thoughts (fears) and leads to compulsions to deal with those thoughts. It can be debilitating to some people. It can be frustrating to deal with as a parent but it has taught me to be more patient.

I have to deal with my son calmly when he is struggling with it. It is tied in with anxiety and me getting upset exacerbates the problem. Patience is not a virtue that I am blessed with, so it has made me a better person. Things have gotten much better with my son and it he has good control of it now.

I'm not diagnosed, but only because I don't need a shrink to tell me I'm fricked because I count how many times I stir my coffee.

20 stirs going clockwise
Lift spoon
Shake lightly 6 times
Put spoon back in cup
6 more stirs going clockwise
Lift spoon
Shake lightly 6 times
Finished
*Unless it is a small cup, then 12 and 6 stirs.

See, I already know I'm fricked, and I am perfectly okay with it.

I count most everything in even numbers. I have to do certain things in even numbers, not all, but certain things.
I, or It, or The World doesn't feel right if I don't. I make things I count come out to even numbers, even if they aren't even, I find way.

We have very similar experiences.

I have to say that you seem to be better at patience than I am.

This counting thing isn't usually OCD. It's also not funny if you could see the way it has ruined his life! He had intrusive thoughts about God that scared him so bad he couldn't eat or drink for days. So weak he couldn't walk. And most of these smartasses wouldn't have crossed him before this.

I feel sorry for those children from what I have read it usually gets worse. Especially the theme it jumps on. I would stay on it. ERP therapy is supposed to help you learn to live with the uncertainty. It is supposed to be hell to go through!

It is a struggle. I saw the negative effects getting upset would have on my son. Getting mad or threatening a punishment didn’t help. I have to remind myself that it is something beyond him and how he has to conquer things that I don’t know or understand. If I’m calm, then it helps him to remain calm and understand that his thoughts are silly and not him.
