Paths of Glory is a pretty great movie, although also pretty depressing. A Very Long Engagement is also excellent.
The battle I find the most interesting is the Somme. In ten years of fighting in Vietnam, the US lost around 50,000 men. In the first day of the Battle of the Somme, the British lost 60,000, and the Germans lost a similar number. The battle then continued for another three months, for the grand gain of about a mile by the Allies, with total casualties in the seven digits. Absolutely stupefying waste of life.

I hear you Dan Carlin but I guess you could say that about many wars. Rich man war, poor man's fight. Maybe because there wasn't a true evil doer like a Hitler, there are sides when bullets fly.

Just finished 'Our World War' on Netflix. Great 3 episodes, definite watch. I have never been all that interested in WW1, my mind always went to WW2 and I have done a lot of studying on it. I will say that playing BF1 on ps4 has piqued my interest in the first world war though and what I have read has been amazing. The simple grotesqueness of the battles is hard to imagine. The brutality of it had to be a total mindf*ck on the soldiers that participated.

Gallipoli- The ANZAC legend. My wife's great-grandfather was a medic there and was wounded. He later served in Belgium and France.
Somme- One of my wife's great-great uncles was killed during the battle and is buried at the Regina Trench Cemetery in France. Another great-great uncle was taken as a prisoner of war.
Meuse-Argonne Offensive- My great-grandfather was an artilleryman during this battle.

Gallipoli was such a clusterfrick. Some units would take the beaches and then just sit there because they had no idea what to do after that. Cost Winston Churchill his job at the time.

There have been some really great books written on The Somme: I wouldn't say "favorite" is the word I would use because it was just sheer horror.
