Maybe. I'd bet minorities are treated roughly more frequently.

But that should be partially countered by the fact that when a white guy is misidentified and pushed against a wall, nobody will hear about it unless he's famous.

But the point isn't that there isn't a racial disparity in treatment, my point is that this probably isn't the product of any specific racial animosity.

I'm guessing if you could set apart street/thug/redneck type offenses, the treatment aspect gets a little closer together for white/black people. I think cops are probably patterned (partially justifiably) to go in more harshly on people accused of such offenses.

Well this why it happened. " misidentified by a witness" has absolutely nothing to do with race.

You are missing the larger point.

NYPD shouldn't do that crap to anyone, black or white.

How is your argument any different than the one where people excuse or mitigate a thug's behavior because he was the son of a murdering drug dealer and his mother was a crack whore?

Meaning that they treat everyone like crap?

I'd be inclined to agree.

This seems so obvious, doesn't it?

You've literally got a guy in this thread suggesting behavior like this is a reflection of the behavior of suspects, and in this case Blake was not only NOT the right guy, but was just fricking standing there.

In what way was HIS behavior the reason for being tackled...or are we also going to say that LEO's can do this because at some point some OTHER jackass may have behaved badly while in their custody and therefore they get carte blanche authority to be dicks to everyone?

There are some on this forum that do get a kick out of throwing LEO's under the bus. I don't...but the truth is that over the years I've become far less understanding of their behavior and think it's about time wholesale changes start getting talked about.

Unless you're suggesting there was a time when criminals were nicer, I'm not exactly seeing your point here.

Not criminals, society in general. History shows it time and again. We ARE moving in the wrong direction. Do you honestly believe that we are as courteous as we used to be? As respectful? As morally upright?

Dealing with criminals is part of the job. They used to be supported by society but more and more, as WE slide to a lower place, THEY react like they can to hold on. Why are they more heavily armed now?

What a vague, unsupported statement this is.

The reason why it seems like there are more of these situations is because the media is covering them more because it gets them higher ratings (because people want to watch/read about them).

It may very well be option B...no doubt.

Problem is...option B also sucks, does it not? If police have always gone this far but the issue was most people simply did not know about it...that may actually be worse, not better. That would mean a lot of these cases where a suspect claimed brutality but was dismissed because "who are you gonna believe" were likely true, but only video evidence has helped to shine the light on these things.

Personally, I'm a huge advocate for body cameras on LEO's. Protects BOTH parties. Only reason a LEO should not want a body camera would be if they felt it would compromise them...which is not ok.

Fact is Mr. Blake was beat up by overzealous LEOs. I really don't think race was a factor given it was in NYC. NYC is such a diverse place I don't understand how race could be an issue. Hell he is lighter in pigment than a lot of Italians.

This

Especially considering the positive reviews that police precincts are giving them. Complaints down some 90% in most. Not only are the cops on the best behavior but so are the people who they are interacting with.

Yes, in all the ways that really count. I'd go into detail, but I'm not going to convince you. suffice it to say, we disagree in regards to the moral decay of the American Culture.

Why are police more heavily armed? Because they can be, not because that weaponry is actually needed in response to most threats it's whipped out for.

I'm busy...Google the stats yourself. Violent crime has been in decline for decades nationwide.

Just no excuse. None.

I have no idea what this cop was thinking.
But, whatever happened to simply walking up to a suspect, identifying yourself as a cop, and saying "sir you are going to need to come with me"?
