In terms of food, it's the ultra high end 5 star places that New York is known for. But in reality, those are places that are impossible to get reservations at, and really how many average joes eat at places like that?
The 3 most popular ethnic foods are Italian, Mexican and Asian (sushi, Chinese, etc.). Obviously New York has the best Italian food in the US. LA has way better Mexican food than NY. The Chinese food is probably about even, but LA has better sushi.

Agreed. LA has a fantastic food scene. It's better in Asian like you say, but "Asian" is pretty varied. It's better in Chinese, Thai, Korean, Japanese, Filipino, and Vietnamese. It's also obviously better in Mexican. NYC is better in most European and African foods (except Ethiopian is tied). It would be basically a push for me except our food scene is considerably cheaper. You can eat two days worth of Korean or Thai for $20. Try that in NYC.
As far as the topic, I tend to agree that NYC is the better place to visit while LA is the better place to live. I love NYC but I doubt I will ever leave LA. Everywhere else is a downgrade for what's important to me. Except for vibrant black community. LA is really no place for us, but it's too late for me.

Asian food in LA versus NYC isn't even close. Especially since tourists stick mainly to Manhattan. Few non-Asians venture to places like flushing for Asian food. For the record I did and still found LA superior.

New York definitely has better European (especially eastern) restaurants. Also they have a bunch of Dominican, Cuban, Puerto Rican places.
New York is really well known for their deli's but to be honest, the deli food in LA is just as good.
On paper New York has a better food scene because of all the 5 star fine dining. the huge discrepancy in Italian food/pizza aside, the average joe would probably enjoy LA eating better than New York.

I went to LA for a vacation just 2 weeks ago.
Places I liked:
-drive to Palos Verdes was stunning, I haven't seen anything like it elsewhere. It was probably the only place in LA that I truly loved.
-In-N-Out burger was worth the hype. I actually liked it better than Shack Shack and Five Guys.
-Malibu/Zuma beach and driving through the Pacific Coast highway was nice
Places that were okay:
-Santa Monica beach/Third Street Promenade was nice but WAY too crowded.
-Manhattan beach and Redondo beach was alright
-Little Tokyo was small but it was okay. Koreatown had some great food.
-Universal Studios was decent.
Place I hated:
-Hollywood walk of fame area is pure trash.
-Venice beach area was filled with low income trashy people
-Beverly hills, sunset blvd, rodeo drive is meh.
-Traffic was terrible and most parts in LA looked trashy. At least in NY you don't have to drive to get anywhere. Beaches in Florida gulf coast and Cancun are much nicer imo.

Sounds like a fair assessment.
Not sure why you hated Beverly Hills. At worst you should feel "meh" about it.
The Hollywood area is fricking disgusting. Crazy homeless people everywhere. It's easily the worst part of LA that attracts tourists.
Venice has the same disgusting people as Hollywood, but for some reason I've always liked Venice and am a lot more tolerant of the trashy people there than in Hollywood.

Eh it is possible to burn out on In-N-Out. Not necessarily dislike it but a law of diminishing returns type thing. Bottom line it is overhyped.
Of course Malibu is nice.
Your places listed as ok...imagine if you lived in Santa Monica. I bet you would like it very much.
Hollywood is dirtier and more gritty than the French Quarter. Last time I was there I saw a guy walking around with a needle in his hand.
Not sure how you could not be impressed with Beverly Hills area.
LA traffic is horrible.

I lived in L.A. for many years.
NYC hands down. One of the best cities in the world to just get lost in for a week.

I live in NYC. Never been and have no desire to go to LA.

I hated NYC personally. I went during the summer and a lot of areas don't have AC. The subways are nasty. People and yellow cabs are everywhere. If you go, make sure you go to the 9/11 museum. That's my only recommendation
LA was a much more pleasant experience. It's spread out, but the scenery is beautiful. We hiked up to the Hollywood Sign, went to Malibu beaches, Santa Monica, Dodgers game, California Science Center. We even went up to Simi Valley to Ronald Reagan Presidential Library. They have the old Air Force One and Marine One that you can walk through and a lot of other cool stuff.
I really liked the views driving on Mulholland Drive as well

I've been to both and I was way more impressed with NYC. I've been back there twice and haven't thought about going back to LA. Our vacation to LA was fun and seemed like a scratch it off the list type vacation, but NYC has so much energy in the city and there's tons of stuff to do. We are looking to go back again soon.

you were a hick like me and the biggest cities you had ever been to were NOLA and Atlanta, which one out of NYC or LA would you pick for a week vacation?

New York, no contest.
Easy to get around, tons to do without having to drive all over the place.
Times Square
Central Park
Empire State Building
Freedom Tower
Statue of Liberty
The Metropolitan
Museum of Natural History
Chinatown
Little Italy
Madison Square Garden
Coney Island
Broadway
Not to mention all the little restaurants, clubs, comedy clubs, etc.

Been to both many times. NYC is really the center of everything this country evolves around. LA is the center of Hollywood. Go to NYC.
You will remember the experience much more.

For a week long vacation I would go to LA, but for an extended weekend a NYC trip is hard to beat.
