You must not have spent much time in NYC because you can easily get two days worth of Korean or Thai for less than $20.
You realize there are huge Korean and Thai populations in NYC, right? We don't have as many Koreans as LA but we do have a pretty significant Koreatown in Manhattan.
Our Chinese population is also massive. We have Chinatown in Manhattan and then another out in Queens, in Flushing. It feels like being in a Chinese city, especially when you're squeezing into a tiny booth in the basement of a building with dozens of Chinese people milling around and someone is making handpulled noodles on a counter in front of you.
You can get literally any cuisine in the world in NYC.
I general agree. LA does have great Korean and sushi, but overall I would rate NYC and San Francisco ahead of LA as far as food destinations go.

Honestly LA wouldn't even be my first choice to visit in California. San Diego or San Francisco would.

In terms of food, it's the ultra high end 5 star places that New York is known for. But in reality, those are places that are impossible to get reservations at, and really how many average joes eat at places like that?
It's not that difficult to get a reservation. My wife (no pics) and I eat at Daniel for our anniversary every year. Just have to call a month in advance.

San Diego
I guess I must have not known where to go because I thought SD was overrated as hell. Now, SF seems like a cool spot.

I absolutely loved living in LA.
But...for a week vacation I'd pick NYC. Things are much closer and you can do and see a lot without needing a car/cab.
LA is too spread out and most of the "touristy" things there suck. The best things about LA require more than a short vacation to realize.
Spot on. The 2 main drawbacks for tourists in la is how spread out our city is(and public transportation sucks) along with the fact that the touristy stuff in la really isn't that great.
nyc is really easy to get navigate as their metro system is amazing and the sites aren't spread out over a 60 mile radius like La.
Also to add on to what others have mentioned is that nyc has an energy unlike any other city.
