Everyone has his or her own definition of a political crisis. Mine is when our collective mental health starts having a profound effect on our politics — and vice versa.

It cannot be a simple coincidence that the two have declined in tandem. The American Psychiatric Association reported that from 2016 to 2017, the proportion of adults who described themselves as more anxious than the previous year was 36 percent. In 2017, more than 17 million American adults had at least one major depressive episode, as did three million adolescents ages 12 to 17. Forty million adults now suffer from an anxiety disorder — nearly 20 percent of the adult population. (These are the known cases of depression and anxiety. The actual numbers must be dumbfounding.)

The really sorrowful reports concern suicide. Among all Americans, the suicide rate increased by 33 percent between 1999 and 2017.

Because every fricking dickhead with a press pass or an outlet keeps telling them how and why they SHOULD or NEED to be depressed.
****Not downplaying real depression.****

Pretty simple. Everyone sugarcoats their life on social media. They see all their friends highlights and none of the lowlights.

So the updates you see all day long on FB and IG are all "good things". Leading you to believe everyone else's life is awesome and yours sucks.

With the average person opening IG or FB 60+ times a day, they're depressing themselves more than ever. Especially if you're sitting around at a job you hate.

Plus if you subject yourself to news outlets, every day something else horrible is going on in the world. Most of which, has zero effect on your life.

So the key to a happy life is turn off the TV, stop scrolling though social media and go enjoy yourself.

Easier said than done. Those things are super addictive and it takes real effort to turn that part of your brain off.

It’s largely a product of our corporate media culture. People who are depressed are more consumerist in nature because they buy and do things to fill the void inside themselves and cope. Depressed people are easily manipulated by politicians. Combine the two and you have a massive volume of spendthrift sadboi voters doing whatever the media tells them to. Facebook reinforces this negative feedback loop and keeps them on the plantation.

That’s right, listen to what I just said and definitely don’t bother looking at economic data showing how debt to income ratio for people under 35 is ginormous due to student loans.

Cause we were all supposed to grow up and achieve fame, cause we're told we can do anything we want to do.

Then shite doesnt work out like you want it.

Agreed, which includes this site. I'm fairly addicted to checking TD on a regular basis.

People depressed? Only those that wake up in the morning and their first thought is "Orange Man bad"...those people have issues, while the rest of us are usually always happy!

I don't recall ever being depressed daily because of who occupied the White House. That is extremely weak minded, IMO.
