Maher has taken on a similar tone recently. It's refreshing.
No, he's been that way for a little while ever since his Cal -Berkely incident.

I agree the Bay Area can’t be reasoned with, but the rest of that state can. Do you really think these Hollywood elites talk with the common man in So Cal? They’re sick of their shite too. If Trump can get 40% of Los Angeles county (something I find feasible) then he’ll get the rest of the surrounding counties. And Garcetti fricking sucks as well, to where people will want to give him a middle finger.

Brooks has always been a moderate voice at the times. I doubt he is forced out.
Sullivan has always been a moderate voice at the times. I doubt he is forced out.
Weiss has always been a moderate voice at the times. I doubt he is forced out.

I don't disagree. I just think there's too much of a critical mass in the bay area/LA area to overcome, no matter how conservative the rest of the state is outside of these hotbeds of nuttery.

LA are mostly lazy Democrats though. They just vote that way without thinking it through and what their friends are doing. The Bay are activist Democrats. I can assure you the vast majority of LA is fricking pissed at Garcetti and will start thinking their vote through more this time around. They see cities burning, and I think a large portion of the LA metro will say “frick that!”

I honestly hope you are correct. I just think you are entirely too optimistic and place too much credit on people to not be sheep, even when they're kicked in the balls over and over.
Battered wife syndrome and all that jazz.

I’m in the LA area a lot for my job (not since Covid though), and to be honest they very much surprised me at how reasonable they were. They wouldn’t at large shut you down like they do in SF, Portland/Eugene, and Seattle (which those cities lived up to the hype). I’ve found that most people down there are sick of the celebrity political bullshite. If Trump could do a rally in So Cal, I’d recommend Ontario for him.

NYT helped create this environment.
Trump is not the source of the issue. He’s just a symptom. The problem is America’s media and the replacement of religion with politics by America’s left.

He was forced out of the NYI, and Vox.

And this matters why?
The fact remains well known writers/editors that were major players in major left-leaning publications have been forced out by the SJW wing.
But if you want to play gotcha instead of paying attention to the actual subject of this post, and of the NYT article, you go ahead and do you. That seems to be your shtick here anyway.

I'm going to read it, but I'm highly skeptical of David Brooks writing about free thought and non-conformity.

What you should be asking yourself is how bad has it gotten that Brooks is writing about this subject and being critical of the progressive left while doing so.

You responded with by snarkily mimicking my post and comparing it to two dissimilar situations.
Now I'm playing gotcha? Get real.

I think Brooks must have to write ten articles where he criticizes Trump and Conservatives from his nice guy "Republican" perspective and then gets to write something he wants.
Posted on 7/24/20 at 4:47 pm to McLemore
You should be. I didn't get the feeling he cared for all free thought. More like he was upset his own version of leftism was under assault and that was unacceptable.

Oops, this is the post I meant to edit as an unfair shot.

So was Sullivan. And Weiss.

They're not dissimilar.

Yes. Hence your "dissimilar situation" post.

Indeed.

Mostly I’m hopeful that the long history of intellectual exclusion and segregation will seem disgraceful. It will seem disgraceful if you’re at a university and only 1.5 percent of the faculty members are conservative. (I’m looking at you, Harvard). A person who ideologically self-segregates will seem pathetic. I’m hoping the definition of a pundit changes — not a foot soldier out for power, but a person who argues in order to come closer to understanding.
UC Berkeley has been (as of late) trying to attract more moderate and conservative students. They have a long, long, long way to go and are not seeing very good results...but they are trying.

You think this is purely a NYT thing? Did you not read the article?
