Brooks argues that our post war focuses on levelling the playing field was a very bad idea.
It killed off the old elite, who were fairly capable, and replaced them with people were motivated primarily by greed, power, or both. And as he observes, they don’t care about outcomes. It’s all about self enrichment.
This describes everyone from Nancy Pelosi, to Joe Biden, on the sleezy end.
This is explains some of the projepms in Washington. We’re being led by some truly awful people.

Fascinating
I have never seen it put this way but I tend to agree with most of what is written.
I especially like the part about making politics the core of your religious identity. I’ve been saying this for years after I heard Rush talk about it decades ago.
To liberals, there is no god so their religion is their political view. It gives them the moral high ground and any difference from their view is heretical and they have strong reactions.
The flaw is that their positions rely on other people’s money and that can’t be rectified.

The news has become what people want. They can't handle the truth and can't stand it when their opinions are challenged, or at least the average person can't.

99% of political analysts were predicting Hillary winning and Bernie getting the nomination until South Carolina and Super Tuesday. It wasn't denial, it was a complete surprise to everyone trump voters included. Even trump was talking about the election being stolen from him. Bernie had a huge delegate lead until South Carolina saved Joe and the other moderates dropped out due to pressure from the DNC. They were good guesses based on the information available at the time.

The third consequence is conformity. Writers are now expected to write as a representative of a group, in order to affirm the self-esteem of the group. Predictability is the point.
This is almost poignant.
I am a pretty regular reddit user, although less lately, and I see this so often. The entire subreddit of r/Boise is convinced that their echo chamber is indicative of how the entire Treasure Valley feels when it comes to political issues that they are shocked when something goes against their view. For example, the fact that there was a BLM protest as well as a counter protest, and the counter protestors outnumbered them 4 to 1. All of the threads were about how ashamed they were that more people didn't show up, and how hateful people were being given the keys to the city. They couldn't fathom that maybe working Americans who were busy with their families didn't participate in their online circle jerks that tried to discredit capitalism, the very system that allows them to voice their opinions from their computer in the first place.
It was the same way when Trump won the election. First it showed their hypocrisy and ineptitude bashing their electoral college, when the electoral college was set up for that very reason, as well as their oblivion to how half of the country feels about the political climate. Celebrities and pundits couldn't believe it because they are detached from the working class American man living in Wisconsin trying to support his family. They are detached from the late 20's guy working at a plant looking for a better opportunity. They are detached from reality, and when reality hits they don't know what to do.
