I think a lot about what people even just a little younger than me will have experienced as they grow old. Our generation obviously had 9/11 as a world-shaking event that changed global politics for at least a couple of decades. Prior generations had the cold war, Kennedy assassination, Vietnam/60s/Civil Rights Movement, WWII, etc.

Not that these are things to envy, but they do build up a society and mark the time.

Of course, since they get to write the history books maybe it'll be along the lines of "I remember when we survived the tyrant Trump and kept Florida above water with no time to spare!"

Trump's presidency will be a pretty short chapter since it hasn't really had a pivotal historic event like a 9/11 or Gulf War, or Berlin Wall coming down, etc.

Schools did a terrible job of educating the current young adults about the Vietnam and Korean wars.

WW2 really hasn't been a big thing in the entertainment industry for awhile now. We still get the occasional movie, sure.

agree, I can remember when I was a kid in elementary school, kids would bring in "souvenirs" for show and tell that their Dad's had brought back from the war, German helmets, Japanese bayonets, some kid in the second grade brought a Luger for show and tell

ETA: and he wore his Dad's paratrooper boots to school that day

I have a black and white picture of my uncle in combat fatigues kneeling on a beach in Korea. That and M.A.S.H. are pretty much my only reference points for that war.

I grew up hearing ww2 stories from my stepfather who served in the army air corps. He was 86 yrs old when he died and that was 23 years ago.

It’s a shame, my grandfather was a colonel in the war but he hated talking about it so I rarely brought it up.

Now that he has passed(lived to 98), I wish I had dug into it more. Last few years of life his mind got way less sharp so I didn’t pry more
