One person, 25 vehicles and 12 houses were hit by falling debris from a Boeing 787-8 as it made an emergency return to Rome’s Fiumicino airport this weekend. The Norwegian flight DY-7115 was scheduled to fly from Rome to Los Angeles but encountered technical problems shortly after take-off.
quote:

Italian media carried numerous eye-witness reports from local residents of the Isola Sacra neighborhood, many of whom talked of hundreds of glowing pieces of metal raining down from the sky. According to Corriere Della Sela, the incident could have been much worse: “Only a few more moments of flight and the incandescent splinters would have hit the center of town, or the crowded beaches of the Roman coast.”

quote:

The plane in question was a 5.5-year-old Boeing 787-8 with the registration LN-LND. The parts are believed to have come from the left engine, a Rolls-Royce Trent 1000, a model that has been plagued with problems.

It’s a Rolls-Royce engine. An automobile analogy for this incident would be a Michelin tire blowing out on a Dodge vehicle.

Has absolutely nothing to do with Boeing. Trent 1000 is a cluster frick.

The problem Boeing has is that they have two very recent and very public lawn darts on their hands. In addition, the general public has no idea that Boeing doesn't make engines and the airline can often select from a variety of engines for a given airframe. Finally, they don't know that engine swaps aren't rare at all and the engines on their flight have a very good chance of not being the engines the plane sold with and if they were swapped, they were installed by the airlines or their contractors, not Boeing.

All the public knows is that it's another problem on another Boeing.

After all, 777Tiger's name isn't 777withGEenginesTiger.

Don't carriers specify the engine? GE or RR?

777 is Rolls Royce known for shitty aircraft engines or is this just specific to this individual engine?

If you know how lawn darts fly, this is a great nickname for the 737 MAX.

RR also has had issues with the Trent 900, which is an A380 option. The Trent 800 on 777-200's seems fairly reliable.

no, they make very fine engines, this version is relatively new and it's had some issues, but overall a very reliable engine
