BATON ROUGE - Onesimo Roberts, a 17-year old-high school senior, is trying to get his first job.

"I'm growing up. I'm trying to prepare myself to become a real adult and to work in this world."

He came out to the Youth Job Fair held at the Jewel Newman Community Center in North Baton Rouge. There, more than a dozen companies conducted interviews on the spot.

"It gives me a better perspective of what the world really is," Roberts said.

This is the community center's first job fair for teenagers, and youngsters will soon be out of school for the summer.

"It's most important that we target the 15 to 19-year-olds. We want to catch them in their early adolescents so we can steer them in the right direction of life," job fair Organizer Ziera Hayes said.

It's not all that easy for teenagers to find summer jobs. The unemployment rate for teenagers is much higher than it is for adults, and many teens don't have any work experience.

But, Onesimo Roberts' name will soon be off that list. With a 4.0 GPA, he has job offers pouring in.

This is how you make a difference in your community and help place kids on a good path, not blocking highways and crying on Facebook.

Kudos to you, Ziera. You’ve done more in one job fair than Gravy and the SJWs could ever dream of.

there's actually some truth to this. you typically can't just walk into a business, ask for an application, interview later that week, and start the next day like the "good ole days".

First, I agree 100% that this is a good thing and far better at helping than whining in any forum.

I will say if the 4th season of The Wire taught us anything is that by 15 you may have missed the boat for many of them as they have already become "corner boys". My point being that while this is great we really need to see more (any?) programs designed to target kids at a much younger age.

This is how you change a community. Not with protests, blaming others or asking the government for help. Individuals just making a difference.

Good for her. I hope she triples the size of her event next year.

This. These kids are long gone by high school. Hell, hard core gang bangers have a life expectancy of 25 in their own minds. 17-18 is middle aged.

I saw this when it aired. While I was really impressed with the young man they interviewed, I was disappointed that there seemed to be only a few kids that showed up. (Disappointed but not surprised.)

I bet that if they targeted towards 1st generation immigrants of all races/country, the place would’ve been swarmed. They’re just more hungry.

Why do you have to be a dick? Your post was pretty good until you added your parenthetical commentary. Why were you not surprised? Tell us.

Why should attending job fairs and being politically engaged citizens have to be mutually exclusive?

To me, if someone in the community holds a job fair to help kids get summer work, that's a good thing. If someone sees problems in their community that have political solutions and decides to hold a march or something about it, that's also a good thing.

Can't we encourage young people to learn work skills without adding "And by the way, keep your mouth shut?"

This is a great initiative and good on the kids who went through this but it highlights the abject failure of the black family unit

It's not the idea of community activism that's the problem. It's the rampid ignorance and outright falsehoods imbedded in that activism by its leadership.

I seriously doubt you would hold the same opinion if a bunch of white teenagers were marching in support of massive deportation of Hispanic-Americans.

Because in a vast majority of cases, the marches are to call for “justice” for criminals who were killed in justified shootings. The hypocrisy is what posters here are calling out

You have to start much earlier than this.

Everyone would be better off if more energy was spent addressing real problems, like unemployment, than chasing bogeymen. Sure, you can devote yourself to maintaining the cult of St Alton and live in outrage your whole life, or you can learn skills and get a job and better yourself.

It is always easy to find a manual labor or construction job.

These people are doing a good thing though. This is an example of someone actually helping the community

Good for him. It's the one way to escape the life many of his peers have.
