Glen Alveris wanted to show his girlfriend how "crazy" he could get when he was upset, so he randomly picked out a woman walking her dog in Bywater earlier this month and shot her in the leg, New Orleans police allege.

Alveris got away with that crime until he got into another fight with his girlfriend four days later, which ended in her stabbing him several times with a kitchen knife, authorities said.

While being questioned by police about the stabbing, the girlfriend reported that in an effort to threaten her, Alveris had randomly fired at a bystander the night of Dec. 10 near North Rampart and Montegut streets.

"He is a severe danger to the community," Assistant District Attorney Michael Henn said at an initial hearing in Orleans Criminal District Court Tuesday. Alveris sat nearby in a wheelchair.

According to court records released Tuesday, a 54-year-old woman and her male companion were walking their dogs in the 3000 block of North Rampart when they heard what sounded like backfire coming from a brown-colored car driving up the street.

The woman realized the noise was gunshots when she felt something strike her left leg. After realizing she had been struck, she went to her nearby home and called police.

Detectives apparently got a break in the case Dec. 14, when a 20-year-old woman called police to report that she had used a kitchen knife to stab her boyfriend during a fight in the 1000 block of Caffin Avenue in the Lower 9th Ward, court records said.

While she was receiving treatment for her injuries at New Orleans East Hospital, the woman told a detective that four nights earlier she and Alveris had been drinking and smoking marijuana at a party on Caffin when they took a ride and began arguing over how she had danced with another man.

During the ride, Alveris pulled out a pistol and told his girlfriend he would kill her. According to the woman, he then said, "I'm going to show you how crazy I am," and shot once at a stranger walking her dog.

The girlfriend described seeing the victim reaching for her lower leg as Alveris said, "I will shoot anybody that plays with me." The couple then returned to the party, police said.
