Absolutely crazy.

That's comforting in a way, I guess.

NOPD - Not Our Problem, Dude

The average driver in New Orleans is baseline drunk, so the NOPD is not even trying.

Honestly... That's the LEAST of the dangers

Are we going to ignore the fact that the author is wearing a mask in her pic?

Are you surprised? You can drive trashed as all hell in nola and BR right now. As long as you dont hit anyone, no one cares

I work and live in New Orleans for the last 20 years. Cops are a rare site and they aren’t pulling anyone over unless they are forced to. Swerving, running lights and stop signs? Nope.
What’s surprising is all the checkpoints they do from time to time didn’t get more than 69 all year.

The only way you can get a DUI in NO is if you get in an accident.

They only investigate if someone dies

But a nurse, who asked to remain anonymous because he fears workplace retaliation, said that although Emergency Medical Services or police bring an obviously intoxicated driver to his emergency department at least twice a month, police typically don't demand a legal blood draw unless there's a fatality.

In 2011, when the NOPD made more than 1,300 drunk driving arrests, there were about 690 crashes resulting in injuries or deaths where alcohol use was suspected, according to LSU's transportation research center. Those accidents have been rising for most years since, topping 1,000 for the first time in recent memory in 2021. That year, there were only 156 DWI arrests.

How many DWI related deaths or injuries did they have?

Guarantee you, Julie was all in on the BLM 'defund the police' stuff back then.

Here's the real deal with that.
Stopping, field testing, transporting, doing the breathalyzer and doing the paperwork for a DWI takes three or four hours. That's if you don't book the person into jail. Add an hour for that if you do. NOPD is putting shifts of six to eight officers out on weekend nights to cover large sections of the city. They literally "ain't got time for dat" and I don't blame them. You can't tie up 10% to 20% of your available manpower when they are having multiple shootings, robberies, murders every night.
I don't think anyone realizes just how screwed the NOPD is right now. They are authorized for something like 1,500 officers. They are "officially" at 900ish but that includes admin, detectives and all the people out on injured / light duty, etc. I am being told by people inside the department that they are fielding something like 600 uniform officers to cover the entire city 24/7. That's scary as hell.

They’re out solving real crimes, obviously

Now let’s see BRPD’s DWI arrest numbers for the year.

NOPD commit more traffic and parking violations than any citizen. They are constantly running red lights and making illegal turns when not responding to a call under lights/siren.

It has to be very low as well. Police are basically non existent on the road at night
