You can be at "full capacity" but if your suction is blocked up from all the trashy people trashing up the drains and your local government doesnt clean up the trash for whatever reasons, it wont work as its designed.
I've seen contractors pour leftover concrete down the drainage inlet.

10 inches in hours is a once in a century level storm.

I guarantee you this had something to do with it. I drove down Broad yesterday and the amount of trash in the streets and the neutral ground around Orleans Ave was appallaing. Like Mardi Gras/second line amounts.
It had to. 5.4 inches over 4 hour and it flooded. Im sorry but a lesser system could handle that if the drains weren't clogged up with trash, what else could it be? Unless it was just plain incompetence of behalf of the S&W board.

certainly it could not hurt to switch them on for an event like Saturday,
Pump cavitation...
But hey...everyone thinks they are an engineer this week.

Yeah those numbers are a little suspicious, I'd like to see them from a different source
What, you don't trust the SWB to properly report rainfall totals after their failure to protect the city?

interesting chart

I would think all the pumps are set to kick on automatically once the water gets to a certain level...

tomorrow there is a town hall meeting to discuss these events from Saturday..I have a feeling this wont go well for anyone within the city or S&WB.
Yea Stacy Head was talking about the catch basins at a meeting just last week and then a few days later this storm happens. I know she’s gonna come out guns blazing tomorrow. The public needs to come out in droves for this meeting.

More like we are in an era of bad government.
We are in a city built like a bath tub and it rained very very hard. The pumps were not designed to keep up with such a rain so it flooded.
This is a risk that was accepted.

I was supposed to be disputing my property taxes this week, I wonder if tomorrow would be a good day

Where did you get this list?
Source: New Orleans Civil Service Department. This information was released under the Louisiana Public Records Act and is current as of May 21, 2015.

yes, most of those people on that list are not in those positions any longer.

You don't think eroding wetlands is part of the cause for increased storm and rain issues?
No, of course not. Eroding Wetlands will mitigate storm surge during a hurricane but doesn't really have an effect during a simple rain event. New Orleans undergoing significant subsidence would have an effect by adding stress to pump stations but this has been occurring since the 1930s.

Yeah she was pissed that the Public Works didn't spend the $3 mil allocated to clean up the catch basins and the director of PW had no frickin' clue why
