I was just about to post this because I, too, was thinking about it at 1:06am on a Saturday:

Drunk drivers and tax cheats = our city leaders

All he needs is a woke jury and he can get away with anything

I don't doubt that the dude is a loser, but that indictment sounds pretty weak.

Haven't read the actual indictment, but few beat the rap in federal court.

after reading, it seems somewhat interesting. this may be the case of an accountant who promoted that he was a CPA doing things he shouldn't have done and when the IRS/feds came down on his clients, "cooperated" to avoid blame
the feds better have more information than just his testimony and accounting/reporting

My wife and in-laws know Jason...he's good people. Apparently from multiple accounts, his accountant is dogshite and falsified multiple people's taxes unknowingly putting them in a shitty situation. Weird that it wasn't an issue until he stated he was running against Leon, and next thing you knew the feds were looking into him. Sadly I think this is all political.

If this was 1950s New Orleans sure. But he might be the last semi-reasonable person with any amount of power left in the city.

Used to be the feds didn't indict / bring to a grand jury unless they 100 percent had you completely nailed.
Not so much these days. Like every other part of the federal government, incompetence and favoritism has crept in.
The problem for the councilman is that tax laws are pretty clear, if you sign a return, you are responsible for what's in it. He's going to have to prove that he didn't know what was in it, which will be hard, or that somehow what he signed wasn't what was filed.
Has he tried to amend returns and set up a payment plan? That would help him.

Oh, they'll get him for something. I'm just saying, the accusations don't exactly paint him as a monster, just as a sleazy dude who finally got caught with one toe over the line.

Well I don't know about all that, but if you just look at the stats, the chances of being found not guilty at a federal court criminal trial are pretty slim.

I think you're being a little naive. I don't doubt that he is a nice guy. But one of the things I noticed is that they said he has a long history of owing taxes to the IRS and not paying them in a timely manner. He's a typical politican from New Orleans just like the mayor. Except that he's also a defense attorney too, so that is a pretty bad combo. They 're used to trying to get out of stuff.
I wasn't crazy about him jumping on the bandwagon with that other guy and proposing a law to ban tear gas use in the city right after the NOPD used teargas on troublemaking protesters who (some anyway) tried to get physically combative with the police to break through their line of defense to keep them from going over. The tear gas did the job.
