defeating an army that declared slavery a right and fought for that right was incredibly important to our country's history and evolution as a society.
You realize you just described both sides of the war right?
You think slavery ended immediately after the war? You think the North gave the slightest shite about slavery?
The war was about economics and state's rights. Slavery want even issue until over half way through the war when the north was losing support.

haven't seen this but wouldn't be surprised given the time period.
So you'll forgive Lincoln and others for the times they lived in but not Lee?
You're and ignorant hypocrital person. The worst kind of propagandist sheep.

What did I just witness?

That is a good point and one that I would definitely need to give more thought. I'm aware it presents a slippery slope scenario
But what we are debating over now is whether to keep a statue honoring a civil war hero that fought against the abolition of slavery, among other things.

Removing a statue or flag and putting it in a museum=deleting history?
Got it.
Nope, it represents people who stood up to an overreaching government. That same government by the way didn't outlaw slavery in the union states until after the war.
The war wasn't fought over slavery, but the right of the states to rule themselves.

Those who alter and attempt to white wash history are doomed to repeat it.
Hope these idiots realize what they're doing.
What hitler did do the jews offends me. Let's tear down Auschwitz.

We all know the reason he is doing it, hell, his sister and father laid the blueprints for this during their times in their respective office.
Personally, I can't figure out for the life of me, what he thinks he ultimately has to gain through this inanity. Any possible hopes he ever had for holding a statewide office again are basically kaput.

Oh like states rights and the right to succeed from the union? But slavery and racism are much more entertaining to throw around.

The cornerstone speech, given by the VP of the Confederacy before the War began discussing the difference in ideology between the Union and CSA:
"Our new Government is founded upon exactly the opposite ideas; its foundations are laid, its cornerstone rests, upon the great truth that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery, subordination to the superior race, is his natural and normal condition"--Alexander Stephens
