quote:That was a matter of interpretive authority. Much more complex than picking and choosing.
I mean isn't that basically what happened when Martin Luther nailed his 95 thesis to the Church doors?
quote:They definitely pick and choose what to emphasize and de emphasize.
Doesn't each demoniation of faith basically pick and choose what parts of the Bible they want to believe?

Agreed. People, mostly protestant Christians, bend themselves up in pretzels trying to justify literal biblical stories.
You can be religious and still recognize that much of the bible is not meant to be factual.

I haven't defended any particular denomination. I don't base my faith on denominational doctrines.

Dinos were wiped out before the flood.

Jesus literally taught in parables, why wouldn't the prophets and biblical authors also write parables for their audiences?

If people think shite is wild today they need to learn about all the different Christian sects that emerged in the Roman Empire.
For real. Christianity in the shadow of the crucifixion and for the few hundred years after was wild.
Anyone who claims to be a Christian today needs to read up on that period and learn about how we got to where we are today.

Even if Noah was not a literal person, it would make no difference in how the NT authors use the story to say true things about Jesus Christ.
I think it would make a difference- either the words written are true or they aren't. The Bible doesn't treat Noah as a parable. There ARE parables in the Bible, but the accounts and references of Noah don't seem to be written as a parable.

Where do people get this crap?
The dinosaurs BUILT the farking Ark. who carried the long timbers up Mt Ararat? Not little Noah and his kids. It was always the farking dinosaurs. And after the flood the dinosaurs flew to Peru and taught cave painting, and then all left the planet because humans were too disgusting.

quote:That's fine. You can have faith for no reason other than "I believe" or you can be faithful with some justification as to why you believe. I try, for the sake of others, to be part of the latter group.
That is known as "Faith". I am unashamed in my faith.

I believe the Bible means what it says- I don't pick and choose, I believe the entirety of it.
Well, which one of these do you believe? The same event recounted by two different authors. They both can't be true:
2 Samuel 24:1: "Again the anger of the Lord burned against Israel, and he incited David against them to say, “Go, number Israel and Judah.”
1 Chronicles 21:1: "Then Satan stood up against Israel and incited David to number Israel."
Did God or Satan incite David to number Israel?

The Catholic churches determines doctrine for its members. Protestant churches allow their individuals to determine it for themselves, which has resulted in the thousands of offshoots, as humans argue over minute details and establish their own churches on that basis.

I always felt that this is a "can't see the forest for the trees" scenario. A lot of what Jesus taught was specifically attacking this sort of pedantic view of how he taught your personal relationship with God should be.
To use modern terminology, he "cut through the red tape" (that was plaguing the Jewish religion at the time).
That's why it's always been weird to me how those extreme sects are so hyper-focused on the details, specifically of the OT. To me it always appeared this was due to personal, non-godly beliefs the originators/leaders of these sects wanted to co-opt with Christianity.
Even as a young kid learning Bible trivia in Catholic school this was apparent to me.

this is what was widely accepted as what really happened, and that's what was taught when I was a kid, they really had a talent for cave painting, btw, especially the T-Rex

quote:I hope this is unsettling, but your meaning of "true" may be different than a 1st century palestinians definition of "true"
either the words written are true or they aren't.
The modern definition of truth as in physical historical events is just a few hundred years old.

I'm actually in the process of doing this (along with being curious about Gnosticism). It's led to some thinking-theories about certain things...
...like how the Roman strategy of empire may have influenced how Christianity was able to spread (basically co-opting the holy places of those other cultures and offering sort of a merging option at first, which would be utter heresy by the Evangelical types today).
This + Christianity speaking to poor people just fueled its spread.
...and, to get a little weird, how ancient cultures in that Med/Anatolia/FC region all developed giant myths to explain how certain megastructures existed prior to their cultures emerging. This includes the Nephilim of the OT.
