Depends how narrow or broad you want to define political. And I'd say that if the military starts defining political messages rather broadly then there'd be a risky precedent set. And it could backfire on many conservative soldiers too.

Just don't treat me like an idiot or hide in fear is what I want from West Point
A simple statement saying there will be discipline for the cadets because they used poor judgement based on the fact they will be expected to lead a diverse group of soliders and the US army is not a group that recognizes race would have been great for me
But to make the statement the Colonel did is insulting to me and the institution.
