Immediate family: be as loud as possible
Extended family: read your audience
Mixed company: cover your mouth and try to exhale the burp as quietly as possible

Not at all acceptable as I was growing up. We weren't fancy people or anything like that, but I damn sure was expected to have decent manners.

I (5) was with cousins (4, 5, 8, 9, 10, 11) at my maternal grandparent's house for a family weekend without any of our parents. Grandma Hemp and Miss Judy cooked us a wonderful Southern dinner.

Midway through dinner, my cousin Bobby farts. Those of us near him snicker.

Grandma Hemp: "What's so funny?"
We look towards Bobby.
"I can't say it at the table."
"Bobby, tell me what trouble you made."
"I can't!"
"Tell me or I will switch your little behind!"
".....I pooted."

She still made him go out to get a switch for an arse whipping.

I know the ages of all of my cousins. How else was I supposed to avoid statutory rape?

My SO is literally a walking burp. I've never seen anything like it. Dude could probably be interviewing for a job and would burp.

Absolutely not - all bodily sounds were frowned upon! We were expected to stifle burps and toot only in the bathroom. If anything ever slipped out, you better believe we'd be apologizing to high heaven! (My mom was otherwise a very fun and funny woman - miss her dearly)

My mother-in-law, however, lets it all rip! Big, loud, wet, exceedingly long belches and farts in front of God and company - without even acknowledging anything occurred. And all.day.long. Makes me sick. Facing - and dreading- a visit this weekend. It's even worse on holidays because the rest of that family does the same dang thing. smh

No it's trashy. Same as farting, and sitting around the house in your underwear or shirtless.

Accidental noises or caught when you think you are alone is one thing, but blatant ripping it out as loud as possible with "high-fives" is pure trash.

In no prude but after I turned 25 I started wishing people would keep their bodily noises to themselves. Someone burping at the dinner table is nasty.

My dad would beat my arse for "disrespecting" my sister if I did this.

My dad was so adamant about stuff like this that my sister would make up that I farted on or around her, when she was bored. "We laugh" about now...freaking bitch. Ha

If a man can't fart and burp while shirtless in his own damn house, then where in this world is he supposed to be truly free?

Let'er rip, boys and girls.
