Nitrogen in your tires

I find this a huge joke. I once was told by a tire man that the N2 element is larger that the air element (which is not an element for you non science people), so it leaks slower.

On "Counting Cars", he did kind of a PSA about N2 in your tires. He said N2 is resistant to heat and so it won't expand like air does, so it doesn't wear on the tire.

I heat up N2 all the time at work with just steam and a portable exchanger. N2 does heat up.

I've seen shops charging $10 to fill tires with N2. I just tell them to use the 78% N2 mixture. I like the stupid looks on their faces.

What is everything operators do for 500?

The advantage to pure nitrogen is you know it's dry.

This is the only argument for N2, but what about the moisture that was already in the tire before inflating, and are you filling it with N2 everytime you check your tires?

Unless the tire was purged with N2 for several minutes in a vacuum, there is already moisture in the tire.

I heat nitrogen at work too, but our exchangers aren't portable.

Y'all don't have small exchangers to heat nitrogen? It's an operator's best friend when drying and purging a vessel.

Why would the external pressure matter?

No, 8 giant ones connected to three cryogenic pumps and a 330,000 LN2 storage tank. Will make >13500 SCFM at 8,250 psi. It's for rockets though, not a plant.

I just bought a truck with N2 in the tires,,,,I’ve noticed a 7psi fluctuation in tire pressure when the outside air temp fluctuates from 75 degrees to 35 degrees

It's not built yet though, at 90% design. Another site I work at has a similar setup on a smaller scale, it's up and running at 6 ksi. Just big gas stations that we hope don't go boom again.

How many pressure vessels y'all have?

Neither of those are elements.

I don't have any pressure vessels in my unit, but there is an ethylene oxide plant across the street. They have a few.

That sounds like stuff I don't want to be around. My work is on vessels of liquid hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, helium, and the occasional RP-1...so our stuff doesn't get eaten from the inside. Just the occasional things falling from the sky when they were supposed to stay up a bit longer.

WTF?!

Nitrogen is an element, just expressed as N2. It is not a compound.
