Always find the gut that's been there the longest.

Or, preferably, make the whole deal via email.

I actually had a salesman call me the day after I walked out on a buy to apologize. I don't remember what he did or said that pissed me off, but it was blatant. I didn't make a big deal out of it, I just got up and left.

Pretty sure it was Salsbury's Dodge on Airline...I think. This was like 2000 or 2001 when I was fresh outta school with money to burn...best time to buy a car is before you really really need one.

But yeah, car salesmen can be total scum.

How long was he paying $600 with a %16 percent interest rate before you found out? As a friend you could have enlightened to the fact that you can refinance a vehicle for a lower interest rate after the initial purchase. I've done it twice through a credit union that my sister in law works for. Both times she called to inform of the new lower int

Had less than 6 months before it was paid off because I broght that up to him. So, it was no bueno.

Those are honestly the easiest transactions by both parties. Especially if a customer gets two dealers competing against each other. They can really get a good deal.

Problem with that is, if you literally get the dealers all in price, then come to the lot, and want to haggle over the trade. A customer isn't going to get full blue book on a trade and an invoice price on the new car.

And if you want the deal of the century, show up pre approved from your bank on the last day of the month. They are giving the damn things away to make their numbers.

Wife purchased vehicle from Richards Honda 2 months ago. We agreed on a price with the salesman after he consulted with his manager blah blah blah. I told him when we were walking from his office to the finance office that the price better not change a penny. The finance manager stated $500 higher than what we had just agreed 30 seconds earlier. He pulled the "let me get your salesman in here" so he paged him and of course he never comes in. Simply told the wife let's go and of course the guy says he would take the $500 off. Should have told them to f off but wife was having a baby in 3 days so wanted to get it over with.

Years ago I went on a few dates with a woman who worked at what was formerly Giles Used Cars now a business called Z-Best or whatever it's called. She said she hated her job so much because the people there were all miserable human beings. We didn't work out but I friended her on Facebook. She moved on to work at another dealership and seems way happier.

Never, ever buy a car from Carmax. Ever!

I concur...I took a vehicle to Carmax to sell knowing that they'd offer me less, I just wanted to make it easy on myself. If Carmax would have gotten within a $1000 or less of what I wanted, I would have sold it to them. Their offer to me was absolutely ridiculous. I put the car in the paper and sold it within a couple of weeks for 3 or 4 thousand more than the Carmax offer...Screw that place.

Then your best bet would be to get online and have dealers competing for your business. Beware in Texas as they have some of the loosest bait and switch laws out there. You could drive three hours to the car lot and the car you thought you were negotiating on was actually a lower model. Happens all the time. A dealership will put pictures of a Grand Cherokee Limited and the description will be a Laredo.

Larger car groups actually cap what they mark up the interest rate. Smaller mom and pop stores do not.

Actually the banks and the governments decide how much the markup can be.

This is just the finance department at any dealership. You have to walk in and say "No, thank you" about a hundred times - sometimes not so nicely.

The trick is to let them think you are going to finance it - work out a price. When you have settled on a price, tell them you have decided to pay cash. They will try and back out of the price, if they do just walk away.

He could have been talking about setting the number even lower that what is allowed. Maybe 1% instead of 2%.

I cannot see a dealership cutting their most secretive weapon though. He could just be wrong. Finance reserve is a big mother fricking money maker, and the public, as a whole, doesn't have a clue.

Also, stupidly focus on just the price of the car and your trade. After they rope-a-dope you with money for an extended warranty, tire package, etc packed into your deal, get the finance guy to take all that bullshite out.

I once pulled over at Nissan Opelousas to take a call and the salesman was knocking on my window within 1 minute of my arrival. As a professional salesman I was astounded by the audacity of this guy. He was banging on my window and asking me to step out of the car.

you need to cut the salesman some slack. He is just trying to earn a living
