News and media reporting is garbage headline clickbait and I wonder if reporters even know

This is not some big controversial story that would likely get much attention...So what do you do? You splash a fearmongering headline like
"China shuts hundreds of banks as Beijing moves to shore up its financial system"
To get attention. But then at the very end of the article you bury the part of the story that conflicts with your headline...
"Fitch said, noting that stress at smaller lenders is unlikely to lead to system-wide contagion"

Here is the full but very short story for you to read.

As others have said, ever notice a news story about a topic you are very familiar with, like one that deals with what you do for a living? It's probably got major parts horribly wrong, and that's every story they run.

There is no more "News". Hasn't been any in a decade or more.
They're all glorified story tellers that are competing for your mind. All of them.

That's basically all media today.... It's all about clicks...
They feed you a bunch of "stay tuned" and "breaking news" BS and it's usually a big nothing...
Fox 8 did a "breaking news" one morning, it's was about a house fire in Indiana...

Trust in the media has to be at an all time low, and they did it to themselves for the most part. In the post WWII era, journalism placed a lot of value on accuracy and objectivity. That doesn't mean they always met those goals, but most tried -- the head of the JM department at AU, a former AP Bureau Chief, said the three most important words in Journalism were "Accuracy, Accuracy, Accuracy."
Now you have a partisan media in disarray because of technology and constant change and the three most important words are "Clicks, Clicks, Clicks."

I repeatedly have found increasingly over the last 40 years that reporters are dumb and getting dumber

The OT isn't much different. It's really just on a smaller scale.
People love posting something that gets traction. The endorphin dump people get from seeing their content get traction has become an addiction.

Honestly, this is why Franklin believed in "Freedom of the Cudgel". He was worried about giving the press such unchecked freedom when they were framing the constitution. His argument was that if a reporter is free to publish whatever story he wants then the target of the article should be free to use a cudgel to bash his head in if he reports lies and misrepresentations. Was his form of checks and balances on the press.
That never happened of course but I do wonder how many lies would be avoided if the folks at CNN and fox had to worry about getting their skulls thumped for all the fricking lies they tell on a constant basis.
