LA because quality of life is better for that amount. But LA blows.

NYC without question. I have several friends that live in CA and they all say the weather is beautiful but they all miss the seasons. NYC gives you 4 good seasons, unbelievable access to mass transit, more things to do, more sporting events to attend and they also have a beach....but it's not open year round (thanks captain obvious). Based on cost of living, your money will go a lot further in LA to the tune of of about $36k.

I think a lot of this also depends on what the OP is looking for in a city. These are 2 completely different cities.

I've never actually been to New York, but I live in LA on a a hell of a lot less than $175

I do miss the public transportation and the snow of the northeast though.

Why would I take an 80% pay cut to move to New York?

NYC hands down is better, but the money might lean towards LA that's not enough for NYC

You don't think you could live comfortably on $175K in NYC?

I'd pick NYC in a heartbeat, frick Los Angeles.

I'd live in Chicago over either of them though.

Not sure why it gets such a bad rep. Lots of cool places around LA, close to beach mountains, desert and a close drive to some spectacular natural areas.

Yeah that's ridiculous. You could easily afford a 7th story walkup in the Bronx on that salary, assuming you don't mind having a roommate or two or three of course.

This. My wife and I make a little more than this combined right now since she is still a poor fellow and pay for places in NYC and Boston. You won't be living the high life, but you will be far from struggling.

Things will be much different next year once she starts working. Our income will basically double. Can't wait.

New York City. If you can't get by making 14 grand a month in NYC, you are doing something wrong

LA for sure. Not only is the weather amazing, but if you want to escape the city, there are so many things to do within a few hours drive...Vegas, Big Bear, Tahoe, etc.

Hell, 2 weeks ago I went camping with a bunch of people at Pismo Beach and rode 4 wheelers and dune buggies on the dunes at the beach.

i still think i'd want ny though. i like stacked cities. i don't like spread out cities. frick houston.

Hahaha, can't handle a simple question without dragging Houston into and sh*tting on it. I bet you're an upbeat person and a blast to be around.
