Murder rose in March by 4.8% compared to last March

It rose by 34.8% in April compared to the same time last April

quote:

Murder is up +4.1% (102 v. 98) for the first four months of 2020 when compared to the first four months of 2019.

quote:

Last month, murders, auto thefts and burglaries also increased, with a 169 percent increase in commercial burglaries (564 compared to 210). Meanwhile, murders were up 4.1 percent (102 compared to 98) for the first four months of 2020 when compared to the first four months of 2019, according to the NYPD.

Until now. Over the month until June 7 — including the crucial Memorial Day weekend — New York’s murder rate more than doubled, to 42 murders, from 18 the year before — a jolt of 133 percent. Shooting victims, including wounded, are up 45 percent. Stabbings are up, too.
quote:

To be clear: Going back to the early ’90s, New York has never seen a sustained increase of this magnitude. Nothing close: The nearest spike in the early summer month was a short-lived 63 percent hike in 2006, just half today’s increase. And that increase did portend an 11 percent murder hike for all of 2006, the second-highest in three decades.

This isn’t an aberration coming off a good spring. For the year, murder is up 25 percent. If these rates hold, New York would end 2020 with an increase in murders twice as high as we’ve seen since 1990.

showed a rise in the city's murder rate during the month of May, as protests and riots continued following the death of George Floyd.

So, they were rioting for maybe 3 days in May in NYC over the GF incident.

This is horrible clickbait shite. I'm sure the numbers have and will go up, but it wasn't due to the riots over the Floyd incident. That happened on a Monday I believe and Minneapolis didn't start until like Thursday and Friday.

I don't think that's the point. If you read the New York Post article, they are tying the increase in crime to the shutdown of the plainclothes unit and less proactive policing as a result of everything that has happened over the last month and a half.
