The stores don’t want their employees confronting thieves at all. Shoplifting costs can be absorbed. Lawsuits from an employee being shot trying to chase someone, or even the thief being injured by the employee aren’t worth it.

I have a coworker who went through a 4 year legal battle after being sued but someone who was stealing from the store she was working at (major recognizable store) when she tried to stop him. True story.

We are no longer allowed to confront people. We can ask people not to shop there anymore and tell them they aren’t welcome

Mostly we just follow them and hope we can see exactly what they stole so we can account for it

frick a thief

The amount of stuff stolen from the college drive walmart has to be astronomical
While all stores get shoplifted, one of the reasons there are "food deserts" in the ghetto is b/c the huge amount of shoplifting eats up the small profit margin for grocery stores

Mantraps, so when someone waltzes out, clerk presses button, person trapped until cops come.

This will be the future. There's a few companies that dominate the market but mostly privately held security companies, so you can't really buy stock in them.

But business is booming, and will continue to.

so when filling out incident reports, even of blatant theft captured on video, we aren't allowed to describe the race of thieves. Apparently all incident reports can potentially be subpoenaed in civil suits and would qualify as evidence that we were profiling as a matter of policy. You also can't use terms like "braids" or "afro".

I don’t see how accurately describing what happened after the fact can be twisted into profiling.

Really sad that black people are forced to steal

We should let food stamps cover liquor and toilet paper too

Walmart is testing a biometric facial recognition system right now.

Store security cameras have started accumulating faces for the database.

When it is fully operational, your face will be scanned when you walk in the parking lot. If you are on their naughty list, a police officer will meet you before you get to the entrance and tell you WM does not allow you into the store.

Start to notice how many cameras they have. And the good clarity on the ones you can see yourself in. It’s interesting.

I think on weekends you can view for free, but during the week they block you if not a subscriber.

A human just walked out of the store with stolen items. I repeat, a human is on the loose. They have stolen items and could be dangerous.

I hope it gets out of control and Wal-Mart has to shut down.

They dont want policing, so be it. Now you live with the consequences.

I've seen someone do this at Home Depot with a cart full of power tools. Walked right out to a waiting car, loaded it up, and drove off. The cashier said it happens from time to time.

"Testing" is the critical word here. The technology isn't here yet to do this at that scale.

Quite the opposite. You're probably paying higher prices to subsidize these people's theft.

Yes it is. Facebook recognized my face when someone posted a wedding party pick from nearly 30 years ago, and I was on the back row and could barely be seen. (It was a large group, so everyone’s face was small).

Wal-Mart can certainly track hi-def close up faces that they take with their own equipment.

Ha, true story.

You know those automatic/motion doors on most big box stores?

Well someone was stealing from the one I worked at. Didnt confront, just shut that door off. Dude tried to take off when I caught him at the door. Ran right smack into the door. Damn near knocked them off the tracks.

Also, when they had that ring come through a while back writing fake checks. I took the obvious fake ID and ripped that shite up right in front of this big black dude. He walked out.

Another fake check with some black girl, I just kept her ID and walked around the store. Told her I was on the phone with the bank to verify the check funds. I was really on the phone with the sheriffs office.

I went to Albertson's on College and apparently someone had just pulled this off, as half the employees were outside just watching him walk towards College. Then a few days ago, I was in the checkout line at Walgreens on College, when the manager stated to a gentleman that they could check him out on this other register...as he walked out of the store with two cases of beer. That was it. They didn't seem upset, or in any rush to call police..nothing.

It pisses me off just to read this. Seeing it happen, I would totally lose it.

I worked in that liquor store in mid-90s. Thugs from Valley Park would walk in, grab a couple handles of gin, and walk out, looking at me, daring me to do something.

I'm like, hell, you want some juice with that?

I'm not getting shot for $7/hr

ETA: And they'd steal the cheap shite. . .
