Scientists in the US have developed a film from the DNA of salmon which gets better at protecting the skin from ultraviolet light the more it is exposed to the Sun.

It also helps lock in moisture beneath the surface which is usually lost during tanning.

quote:

The film was made from a mixture of the DNA from salmon sperm, water and ethanol to create sheets of a transparent crystalline material.

-Guy German, assistant professor of biomedical engineering at Binghamton University, State University of New York.
quote:

The team also wants to test whether the material could also be useful as a wound covering. Because it is transparent, doctors would be able to monitor how well a wound was healing without removing the dressing.

"Not only do we think this might have applications for sunscreen and moisturizers directly, but if it's optically transparent and prevents tissue damage from the sun and it's good at keeping the skin hydrated, we think this might be potentially exploitable as a wound covering for extreme environments," he added.

This sounds like it belongs in the fetish thread.

ETA:

quote:

They found that the more they exposed the film to UV light, the better the film got at absorbing it.

"If you translate that, it means to me that if you use this as a topical cream or sunscreen, the longer that you stay out on the beach, the better it gets at being a sunscreen," said Dr German.

Very cool though

So do they need salmon sperm for every batch or did they just synthesize it and can replicate it artificially? Reason I ask is for sustainability, if they have to actually extract it from live salmon each time that will drive up the price of the fish as well as have potentially harmful effects on the stocks.

Without reading the article, I would assume they just took genes from Salmon DNA, and are mass producing gene products in a bio reactor.

You aren't slathering processed salmon sperm on those burns.

ETA: Although it looks like they actually are.

Seriously though, DNA is far too easily mass produced for them to to keep a fish farm in a factory. Especially in a case like this where they don't care about the fidelity of the DNA. I somewhat question the efficacy compared to standard suntan lotions however.

I wonder how many different animals they had to jerk off before they discovered salmon sperm to be the most beneficial.
