I've lived in both and NOLA is home.
Take Houston. Go home when you want.

I had that choice when I was your age, except I was living in NOLA at the time. Took a job in Houston for 3 years, and from pretty much the beginning could not wait to move back to NOLA. For some, the pull of home is too strong to ignore, and overrides more practical considerations. From your responses, you sound like you are also being drawn back to New Orleans. If you do not try it now, you may get settled in Houston and always wonder what could have been.

When I had this same option I moved back home to New Orleans. Was an easy choice with no kids.

Go with the city in Texas.

All BS aside, Houston is hands down the safe, practical choice. There is zero comparison in that regard.
But, I respect heart strings and heritage. I love NOLA but the idea of raising a family in that environment day in and day out after experiencing Houston/Woodlands is frightening.
And, to be real, the indigent/hard working under belly of Houston is refreshing compared to the scumbag govt entitled trash of SOLA.

Houston is a great city to build wealth and experience in. But once you have kids, unless you live in the burbs and don't mind an hour long commute each way, education costs go through the fricking roof

I lived in Katy for 6 years after Katrina. Moved back to NOLA 5 years ago. Wife is a NOLA girl and wanted to be back near her mama.
We've been pretty happy here, but it depends on how you define happiness. Being near friends and family is important to us. Being able to drop the kids off at grandmas for a last minute sleepover is valuable to us.
Money and profession wise, there is no question that Houston will generally provide more. I'd be paid more, live in a bigger house, and probably would have had more professional opportunities if we stayed in Houston. But... I think we have a very good life here in NOLA.
I think the school thing, some of the people on this board aren't being completely honest. Houston has some amazing schools. They also have some terrible, awful, not good schools.
If you live in HISD, you are not sending your kids to those schools, unless you get into a magnet. Just like if you live in Orleans Parish, you are not sending your kids to OPSB schools unless you get into Franklin or Lusher. Just like if you live in EBR, you are not sending your kids to EBR schools unless it's a magnet.
In Houston, some of the suburbs have terrible schools as well, just like Jefferson Parish has some terrible schools. And in Houston, some of the suburbs have good schools that are fine to send your kids to, just like there are suburbs in Baton Rouge and New Orleans that have schools that are fine to send your kids to.
And if you do live in HISD and send your kids to a private school... they are at least twice as expensive as the ones here. Jesuit NOLA tuition is $8,850. Strake Jesuit (Houston) tuition is $19,200.

cheaper car insurance,
Moving from Katy Texas to St Bernard Parish, my car insurance for my and my wife went up $35 for a 6 month period. Texas has terrible insurance rates.
Not to mention cable, water, and electric are all cheaper in LA. The electric really surprises me... let's just say deregulation hasn't worked.

Yeah, I think DWI "checkpoints" are illegal in Texas, but there are tons of cops out there looking for drunks.
I've gotten 4 moving violations in my life - 2 for speeding and 2 for running a stop sign - and all four of them were during the 6 years I lived in Houston. Traffic cops out there are brutal. i think it's because of that thing where you can get one ticket a year dismissed by going to a day of traffic school... the cops know that many people will do that and not fight it.

And while Strake is great, that's half the cost of Episcopal High and Kinkaid. Schools in Houston are fricking insane. Unless you're comfortable sending your kid to an HISD, Latino majority, impoverished school with low testing scores, you're paying out your arse for education.

I agree...
Live on the edge and worry about getting killed and your wife potentially raped in a crime ridden area that condones corruption and violence.
Best thing I did was get the frick out of Uptown.
