It's a civil penalty.

All the more reason why it's a sham. A real speeding ticket is a criminal issue and if it were about "saving lives" and protecting kids as he said in his press conference, the violation would be dealt with in the same context.

Removing it from a traditional speeding/traffic court context lowers the barrier for them to take your money.

civil traffic infractions are ultimately issued by law enforcement.

"Civil traffic infraction" is an oxymoron. Why aren't these "civil traffic infractions" reported to any motor vehicle records database, on par with real speeding or other reckless vehicle operation citations?

Uhh, it also makes it fine-only and you can't be taken to jail at any point (that's the difference between civil and criminal... i.e.: "decriminalized").

You are insinuating that the government is issuing false tickets for something that did not happen. Video evidence proves otherwise.

Edit: "Paying Parking Tickets

Payment of parking tickets are a civil offense and payment will not appear on your state driving record."

City of San Antonio
Oh my God, the horror! Parking tickets are civil fines only and the Sixth Amendment doesn't apply! Those cocksuckers... (never mind that it's always been that way).

I live on St. Charles and I cranked it to 40 once just to try it. My teeth were chattering.

I drive Jackson everyday and usually a combination of Magazine, Prytania, and St. Charles I've never received a camera ticket, red light nor speeding. The buffers really make it a nonissue for responsible drivers.

The biggest issue is the placement in school zones and the school zone times extending as late as 9am and 4:45pm, that's a trap. I imagine getting a ticket a 4:40 when going 27 in a school zone that otherwise would be 30 must really suck when there's no school traffic because the school got out at 3.

Shoot em the bird when you speed past them it makes for a much better photo when you get the ticket in the mail.

They need mobile camera units to stop drive-by shootings.
